About the match in 1979, sure i’ve seen Georgie Berry being interviewed in the clips.
This was way before my time but can any older posters share any light on the severity of racism they’ve encountered?

I remember attending Stoke v Liverpool in November 1984. I stood in the Butler Street paddock, and the ball landed on the terrace for a Stoke throw in. A Liverpool fan held on to the ball (they used to be all over the ground in those days), and told Mark Chamberlain to ‘Fuck off to Ethiopia, you n****’ as he waited for the ball. This was pretty ordinary back then, though it shocked me. Some clubs had real problems with vocal racism, Leeds and Newcastle and both Liverpool clubs stick in my mind. Football always holds a mirror up to society, and it was a societal problem too.

This was first broadcast on the BBC in November 2016 and I remember a long thread on here from that time.
I never did find out the score of the game?!

This was first broadcast on the BBC in November 2016 and I remember a long thread on here from that time. I never did find out the score of the game?! I seem to recall it was 2-1 to the Black team with one goal from a young, athletic Garth Crooks! But don't hold me to that, I may be mistaken?

It wasn't good.. ..bananas thrown, monkey chants, liberal use of the N Word...much like Russia today... the game was won by the black players 2-1 I think it was... It was Len Cantellos testimonial and the black players team was put together by Cyrille Regis a team mate of Cantello.

This was way before my time but can any older posters share any light on the severity of racism they’ve encountered? Racism was way more overt back then, as were most kinds of prejudice. Football was just a microcosm of that fact. Unfortunately there's still plenty of it around to this day, but that's people for you.

Racism was rife in the 70's ,people en masse chanting at nearly all grounds, people say grounds such as Leeds Chelsea Everton Newcastle and Millwall being among the worst, in my opinion all teams were as bad as each other, as an example we played a coloured lad Ivor Linton never going to be a top player but always gave his best, but upon scoring to put us ahead one game I heard on the Holte End someone shout "that don't count its still 1-1, black c**t" Other examples at The Villa (not to glorify in any way but to enlighten those too young to remember) "Ni***r, Ni***r lick my boots" "We are all white"(when the other team had coloured players And we didn't) Throwing bananas at coloured players most notably "The 3 Degrees" Regis, Cunningham and Batson at WBA,Regis nullified the abuse by eating one , true that is ! Monkey noise chanting frequently It was pathetic to the extent that after abusing coloured players from the other side when one of our coloured players scored they got cheered by the same Villa abusers, I confronted one whos answer was "he's alright for a c**n cus he's our c**n" Thank God I didn't get involved in any of that stuff as it would if made me the world's largest hippocrite as I have loads of coloured mates from the forces including my children's godfather

It was interesting when Bob Hazell said he'd hear their fans racially abusing opposition black players but they wouldn't abuse him. It was hurtful for them to hear it even if it's directed at an opposing player.
It reminded me of Burnley away on 31/10/92 at Turf Moor when a Stokie behind me yelled racial abuse at a black Burnley player. I turned around and pointed out Mark Stein was also black would he say vile shit about him? The sheepish reply was "Yeah but he's Stoke". He seemed embarrassed by what he'd said. I hope he was. And if you are reading this you were a moron and I hope you've developed.

We've (as a societal collective) come a long way. There's still a long way to go and don't be naive to think that racism doesn't still exist, it just takes different and less obvious shapes now.
It doesn't surprise me because of the times when it was but I still find it astonishing that a game like that would be allowed to go ahead in the first place. I see no positive reason why it would except to create further division. Was there any trouble?
I too remember (I'm 37) regular chants of "you black b****", "ni""er" and regular monkey chanting as a young potter. I don't think any club was really spared from it as it was almost a socially accepted norm. I'm just glad I was raised to not do it, ever. That said, from my experience I see the biggest perpetrators in this area to be from certain generations gone before mine (not exclusively but by and large). Again, I only blame social acceptance for that.

You may not remember programmes like Love thy Neighbor, Till Death Us Do Part, and that classic The Black and White Minstrel Show, simply would not be aired these days.

This sort of got me thinking about a Black v White all time stoke match. Pretty even in all areas i'd say, except maybe in goal, the only black goalie I can think of is Grant... Big question though is , if selected of course, who would SJW play for....

I remember lots of racist shouting from the terraces (and stands) throughout the 70s and 80s. What shocked me was in the mid-90s, by which time it was thankfully on the wane, at a game at The Vic against Nottingham Forest, there was a young bloke near me -bomber jacket, smartly coiffed blond hair, with smirking girlfriend in tow - screaming racist abuse until he was puce in the face throughout the whole game at every black player on the pitch. I told a steward, who just shrugged.
If he’s on here, now middle-aged, I hope he’s grown out of it, because he was a cunt of the lowest order.

Vaguely remember through re-runs. Certainly remember the story undertones though... The general consensus is that the education people have had over their life to form opinions, principles is largely because of the education system or mostly home/upbringing. Broadcasters play a huge role too, and that still hasn't changed today... For the worse...

Remember at the old ground, Stoke would have been struggling and the manager Mick Mills had Carl Saunders warning up, a moron in the seats behind me kept shouting, "Millay - get the N***** on !" (About 1990 ?) Anyway, I asked a policewoman if she could warn moron about his language and she replied, "No"...... unbelievable response, even 28 years ago ??
