Signed Etebo (looks an absolute beast) Signed Afobe (proven goalscorer at this level) Signed Allen to a new contract (unbelievable bit of business which nobody saw coming) News that the likes of Bauer, Indi and Peters are likely to stay (in addition to Ryan) The sum of all those parts? Moan, Moan, moan. Jesus wept. So we've kept ALL the worst defence in our history and you think that's good... Etebo looks ok as does Afobe only Bauer and Allen deserved to keep their jobs from the rest. Now he's after keeping Butland. Why not just keep them all and pretend we were just unlucky and it was all Hughes fault. The rose tinted glasses on here have become Stevie Wonder specials. Etebo looks "ok"?

Butland made the most saves of any keeper in the Premier League last season. He may not have been the best and made a few mistakes but believe me there isn't a keeper out there who doesn't. Don't pretend it wouldn't be some unbelievable work to get him to stay along with Bauer and Allen. If we had had a stable back 4 last season for the whole campaign we'd have stayed up, we were defensively much better after Hughes. You're forgetting how differently players play under different managers, we have a new manager now who could change all of the player's poor form, if he is being backed completely by the owners then they will believe that a lot of the current playing staff will respond to the appointment. We'll win the league this year!!!

We're in pretty good shape. A couple of very good signings already in the bag, with a month for more. We do need new blood, but, have no doubt, Mr Rowett will add motivation to the squad.
We will have a good season with the current squad strength, the next step is adding the players to make it a great season. I'm feeling optimistic already.

So having pulled the rug from under Hughes with his self sufficiency crap, then failing completely to back Lambert what on Earth leads you to believe the old leopard will change his spots with Rowett? Already we are seeing players stay who do not deserve to and root and branch changes that were promised being swept under the carpet with Sentinel campaigns to try and bolster the failed transfer team so they can stay. They have shifted all blame as a collective group of failures to the one man who has paid the price for all their cock ups and left. Hughes was not is not and never will be blameless but neither is he the sole reason for demise.

Could the world cup be a reason for a lack of transfer activity? Yes, the World Cup has to be a factor. Also, I think that player's contracts generally expire at the end of June & it's only just the beginning of July, so announcements may well be imminent. P.S. Please don't shoot me down if I've got the date wrong !

A couple of games does not make a season remember Giannelli Imbula's first game for us? We thought we had a world beater.

Whittle,Tweed and Dyson lining up in August are they? Wish I hadn't posted this. in combination with this post, the World Cup, some Stilton (from Lidyl, pretty good too) last night I dreamt that Dyson & Dave McAughtrie we're taking penalties to ensure Stoke beat Costa Rica in the Azteca stadium (obviously all World Cups take place there). Not only did they miss most but for some reason these two took all the penalties & the ones Dyson did score counted as own goals. Going to lay off the cheese tonight...

Hughes was not is not and never will be blameless but neither is he the sole reason for demise. I wanted Scholes and Cartwright gone more than anyone, believe me. But we have shown already so far that the money is available for Rowett to spend, Etebo and Afobe certainly weren't cheap at all, and look to be excellent acquisitions. It was quite clear that after the shocking shit we were showing under Hughes that Coates knew he'd fucked up, couldn't bring himself to let Hughes spend any more money, then only got Lambert in as a stop gap to finish the season, probably relegated, if he happened to keep us up then so be it. Then we would regroup, smash the championship and take a fresh shot at getting back up to the Premier League. I blame Coates as much as anyone else for all of the failings over the last couple of seasons. He never pulled the rug from under Hughes with self sufficiency at all, Hughes knew he was coming in to a role with low funds after a lot of lost value in players from the Pulis era. Sorry Leslie...

So these players that we are bringing in to play at Championship level. If they succeed just what are you going to do with them next season as I assume they will all be given the usual Stoke totally OTT 50 year contract. The same idiots that brought Lambert in are ALL still at the club and we had NO star players they flopped as a team remember. Only Shaq on occasion and Bauer ever shone. Sure we've has less talented players in our team but tell me when they gave less effort than last year? If we had shown some serious intent last season we would still be in the premiership with some premiership quality players. The thought of never seeing Stoke back in the top flight is enough to put a massive downer on anyone after it was so casually thrown away by a blinkered owner whose sole thought was saving money in the short term. I never thought I'd wait 52 years to see England still not win the World Cup again or 23 years to see Stoke get back into the top flight. but that is the enormity of what we have let go. This spin doctoring that has us already promoted back next season is dream land thinking when we have only brought in a couple of players to replace an entire team of wasters. I don't think anybody is 'spin doctoring us back into the top flight' but given the mess we ended the season in, we've taken some unexpectedly positive steps, no? The past is the past, why not just see what happens this time before the doom mongering kicks in? As you say, we've no right to assume we'll get promoted, so let's let high-end Championship players do their thing and see how we go before we start worrying about what to do with them in the Prem, eh? Bit of a mixed message that? Last time we were promoted, we did so with a team of Champo players and loads of them made the step up. As did many of the players at the three promoted clubs who survived at our expense last season and at Burnley, who are now preparing for a European campaign. The long contracts thing is frustrating but it's a reaction to giving our star players shorter contracts and then watching them leave for peanuts. It's a bit of a catch-22. Not sure why you expected England to win the World Cup again, we've never really been good enough and even when we won it we had home advantage and some generous refereeing. We were still good enough to win it in 1970 that game against Brazil was one of the best quality games I've ever seen even if I did watch it in Rumbelows shop window in Perranporth. Beazil went on to win the cup, if we had won then I expect we would have gone on to win the cup too. That Brazil team is still the best national team ever in my opinion.

Perhaps we should employ the Uruguay manager as they usually do well with a country of 3 million people the same as Wales. What's needed is a huge push by the FA to get a British team and end the stupidity of 4 nations with no noses. With the Scots in the lowest pit they've ever been in football wise now is the time to get it done and compete as Britain at the Olympics, Euros and the World Cup. Best, Law, Giggs, Souness to just name a few could have made a big difference.

A remake of the Gordon Banks in goal fast show sketch... Ramsey?, nah The scots would contribute little more than the half time salmon with a tot of whiskey, the Irish a couple of shamrocks.

We are a nation of rabbits who only do well when we stick together . Where other players Ronaldo for example jump into the lights and do a show. Mentality not ability is what we have lacked for years. Southgate knows that, which is why we have a small hope. That's certainly part of it I agree. But I think in the past it's also been because we're tactically and technically comfortably behind the best nations. How often have managers shown a distrust of skill or flair in favour of blood and thunder? Those are the attributes we've prized and we've paid for it. We've also treated anyone trying to innovate tactically as some sort of speccy four-eyed nerd who needs to be put in their place, when the best players, certainly in Europe through the years, have been taught to think tactically from an early age.

Our tactics scarcely changed from 1966-2016, 4 at the back (apart from 98 World Cup) thus no flexibility in playing the ball out to feet, which then leads to a bypassing of the midfield (where arguably our most talented players have been) or us passing the ball around in a toothless manner before bunting it upfield and hoping Hurst/Hunt//Keegan/Francis/Mariner/Channon/Lineker/Barnes/Shearer/Owen/Rooney can do something with it and take a chance. We've had no identity at all, and have been unable to adopt a system and make it our own. You think of Spain you get Tiki Taka, you think of Italy you get Catenaccio, you think of Brazil you get Joga Bonito...you think of England....and....... There's way too much emphasis on "passion" in English football, but passion only works when it's linked with an identity and a system. No one can argue other nations aren't "passionate", they just exhibit through their tactics.

Think that's a touch harsh. If we retain Butland, Bauer, Pieters, Shawcross, BMI and Allen, the scale of rebuild we envisaged in a worst case scenario isn't really necessary, is it? I think, all things considered, we're in a perfectly fine position with Etebo and Afobe brought in at this stage. Still 6 weeks left to get the 2-3 other significant additions we need. Can see us getting a couple of wingers, another striker and a centre-half at the very least. It is interesting how things pan out isnt it? I shared your view at the time you posted this and indeed I reflected that perhaps I was too harsh re my original post Jump forward and I fear we were both wrong. Apart from Butland, the rest look a bit shot at the moment and I am struggling to understand what our spine of the team is let alone the rest The recruits are now pretty underwhelming The club just seems in turmoil with publically naming players to leave, but still none have It just remains amazing that we have come to this after the high of the Liverpool beating The whole lot should hang their heads in shame Something radical needs to happen as we only have two years before the money parachutes dry up if the board are serious about getting baxk up. They can hide behind excuses of no one wants our players etc - but that is all it is an excuse and they are stinking the club out To be honest all the actions to date appear to indicate we have had our time in the sun

The defence was a lot better once Hughes had been fooled off. Agreed. Whatever our deficiencies under Lambert, our defence was not amongst them. The OP seems to regret that Shawcross, BMI, Pieters and (possibly) Butland could still be in the defensive squad for the season - I'm delighted that they could still be with us. We need some new defensive blood, certainly, and the wages released by the departures of Wimmer and Zouma means we should be able to add to the squad without too much trouble. As mentioned above, the World Cup will certainly have delayed many moves (in and out) - it always does - why should this summer be any different? I think it is probably best that the OP stays off the board until the season kicks off - with his manic depressive tendencies it will be better for his mental health if he does. Leave the worrying to those who have the stomach for it. He could use the free time to polish up his spelling - he shouldn't really be in the 43% of Stokies who have no idea how to spell the word lose. I think you will find my fears are playing out you pompous person who thinks he can tell other posters what to and what not to post
