I was down the allotment at about 5 and the air ambulance was circling. My first thought was someone in the lake.
Doesn't bare thinking about. It's knocked sick thinking about it,yet it's something we've all done at some point in our lives.

I've just had the same thought walking around the bottom end of Tittesworth reservoir. Young lads and girls 13 to 16 mark and it's obvious that a few of them have been swimming despite all the warnings on the dam. There were two young men swimming there last week as well.

Sadly, very sadly you really can't go missing in a lake. You haven't just wandered off have you. God knows what the poor parents are going through.

When I lived down south there was an old clay pit nearby called the Blue lagoon. It was quite pleasant to walk around but sadly local youngsters thought it was a swimming pool. The rest is history. Very sad.

Westport Lake was formed by the flooding of an old pit shaft and workings underground - notoriously dangerous - like Bathpool at Kidsgrove which was similarly formed - remember my late grandad telling us a tale about one of his school pals who was a strong swimmer getting into difficulty when swimming across Bathpool in the 1920s and went under and was never recovered.
I hope for a miracle but it don't look good.......parents must be out of their minds with worry / fear - heart goes out to them

Terribly sad for all concerned. The poor parents must be devastated.
I don't know what can be done to educate kids just how dangerous it is to go swimming in these places.

Even strong swimmers get into trouble in these lakes. It was on BBC Radio 5 this morning about how even though the outside temperature is high the water temperature is still very cold, a lot colder than a swimming pool, and people get into difficulty by gulping, which is the natural reaction to jumping into cold water, and in doing so you swallow copious amounts of water and sadly this very often leads to drowning, as you just cant get your breath.

Growing up in the 70s, it seemed someone drowned in Park Hall Lake every summer. Made me very wary of lakes as a way of cooling off.

I remember a lad drowning in James's/Jamies pond in Bucknall when I was about 10-so 1977.
That was an old mine shaft flooded.

All 3 lads were struggling in the water but only 2 got out. Given that the lake was built on a flooded mine shaft & underground workings there will be strong undercurrents that even strong swimmers will struggle with. And he might not be a very good swimmer or even to be able to swim at all. Just hope they find him now for the parents to have 'closure' And to think that I was walking round the lake from Middleport Pottery with a group of people the day before. Tragic.

I doubt it too, maybe just looking for any glimmer of hope as you do in these times is it possible that the lad has ended up going down the mineshaft hence the struggle to find him?

Are you sure about undercurrents in a lake. I mean where would they come from as there’s no tide...

I swam in that lake as a kid back in the 70`s , with that bit of a beach that was there it was basically encouraged. How times have changed.

To be honest the lad probably wasn't the greatest of swimmers. He may have got caught on an old shopping trolley or fridge that is part of the debris in the lake. Just a tragic accident probably.

Are you sure about undercurrents in a lake. I mean where would they come from as there’s no tide... You don't need tides to cause undercurrents. All lakes have them..they are caused by various things..water pressure, temperature, underground streams, variations in the water table. By definition ANY lake with mine shafts and flooded underground workings will have undercurrents.

I had no idea it was a flooded mineshaft.
The issue with these lakes are they look safe to the visible eye.

I don't know if it's a product of age or becoming a parent, but when things like this happened 30 years ago, I would not give the subject much thought (unless I knew the kid). Now as a father of two boys, one of which is a similar age to the missing boy, I found the whole thing terrible and cannot help but put myself in the same situation as the boy's parents.
One day life is normal, the next you're world is turned upside down and will never be the same again.
