When we were facing trying to get promotion back at first attempt? I remember 1986 there being zero expectation but I was pretty happy we'd got Mick Mills. Didn't start going until 1978.
Pretty grim as I remember,we`d just had to sell Jimmy Greenhoff to Man U against his wishes to pay for the new roof on the Butler Street Stand and there wasn`nt a great deal of optimism at all.
85 there were genuine appropriate fears we could go through the divisions. Mick stabilised us and did well in his first two seasons in that respect.
In 1990 the Alan Ball stimulared mania led to thrilling exciting optimism. It didn't which turn out right though. Which is why right now I'm quietly pleased but not shouting too loud about the good things happening.
I remember the first game at Mansfield! We were a lot more effective off the pitch than on it!
Alex Lindsay Howard Kendall, Dave Gregory and Paul Richardson all made their debuts as I recall. This was the Blyth Spartans season which ended with Alan Durban being brought in Feb/March ish
So it wonna very good! Durban sorted us out for the following season though! 😊

The Alan Ball flat cap I purchased came with a guarantee of promotion according to the man in the shop. Lying bastard......

I shall always remember that Mansfield game, Peter Shilton had a face on him like a smacked arse , I think he was sold the following week .No tears spilt , great goalkeeper that he was, he never showed it whilst he played for us.

hmm
am I right in thinking the transfer window closes after we have played our first game? Could be a Butland/Shilton parallel?

I doubt it tbh. Shilton was desperate for a move and probably regretted coming to Stoke when we didn't win the league in 74-75.
Butland strikes me as a much more honest less selfish kind of person than Shilton

Ha ha that game was memorable alright, thousands descended on Field Mill. Lost too if I remember right.

I read somewhere Brian Clough attended that match specifically to approach Shilton because he knew he would hate playing at Mansfield
Shilton hahahaha to me an average keeper, out jumped by a man half his size in 1986 and should never have been allowed near the 1990 England world cup team (flying pig). As for his time at Stoke I was never really impressed tbh.

Shilton at his peak, 1978 to 1986, was a world class keeper.
We started with George Eastham as manager who had assembled a group of players who were either pre or post fuck ups, the only bright thing was that Punk had arrived. Eastham went after the Blythe Spartans game then we had the arrival of this bright young manager Durban, I think his first purchase was this giant forward from Doncaster. I can remember a turning point in our history as our new giant was sent out to warm up for some reason the Boothen stirred into life chanting for our new heroes introduction, then on he came for a corner at the open end ,in it came our giant rose and bang the ball was in the net game won and Big Bren had announced himself to a hope starved public. From then on we were on a roll right up to the day that Durban left for Sunderland . They were dark bleak days but i have always thought that we were closer as a group, maybe because we all had similar backgrounds and occupations?

Great as Ieft longton highl school , Robbie Earle’s brother was in my class and a good mate , and also Phil heaths brother was in my year to , happy days and memory’s
Me and my mates decided to do every away match and not attend home games out of protest at being sold down the river for the cost of a bit of insurance. What a season of awaydays, ten or so of us in a transit works van. After the blitz that was Mansfield we struggled to find pubs even open for matchdays. Needless to say the walks to the ground from further afield were very educational!!! oh the good old days were fun.

Eastham had gone before the Blyth Spartans game, Alan A’Court being in charge for that debacle.

Thinking back, I don’t think we have ever recovered well from a relegation in the following season. Certainly all the ones I remember have been immensely disappointing and resulting (usually) in another managerial change and rebuild the season after.
Unrealistic expectation saw off Ball and Little, zero expectations saved Mills...and I can’t really remember Easthams reign. The biggest single challenge is to change the mentality of the players from losing all the time to winning all the time...and that process can take ages.
