I also think anyone not performing gets left out the next game apart from Kane. No second chances.

I was watching the game out in Turkey.I arrived fairly late and just saw the team on the screen. I turned to my son and said is that the bench? 1-7 looked piss poor. I have to say if anyone thinks that was a decent performance they are deluded. That was second rate V a second rate team. For me the system does not suit the players we have and we will be dismantled by bigger and better teams. Well get through but go out in the first KO round as normal. Personally, I don't think Southgate should have been anywhere near the England job and to me he is another FA lick arse without the nouse at this level. Think we will see post Panama he will need arm bands and a rubber ring on he will be so far out of his depth. Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Why do you say the defence needs work? They had nothing to do in the entirety of the match. Literally nothing? They looked shaky in the friendlies and nervy near our own box last night. They conspired to give a goal to a team who came for a goalless draw. I genuinely cannot remember a single instance when they got into our penalty area, other than the cross that led to a very harsh and dubious penalty decision. Against better sides, they may well get exposed, but I canโt criticise the defence last night, it was like a night off for them. We could have played โrush goalieโ.

For all that we won and indeed, that other results are 'encouraging', I seriously doubt we have sent any shivers whatsoever down the spine of any major footballing power.

Who has? Brazil are a bunch of diving fannies, Argentina are the South American England, Germany couldnโt score never mind beat Mexico, France needed VAR to get a win over Australia and Belgium were as poor against the worst side in the competition as we were second half. That leaves Spain and Portugal- Spain I think might be the team to beat, and if Ronaldo just hits form all tournament then Portugal wonโt be far away- but the rest have shown nothing to make anyone worry?

I think we will be better against stronger teams as we have a team with pace and prefer to counter attack, we always struggle against teams that are happy to play 10 men behind the ball.

Donโt worry Oz, those boys in the VAR room will have been sufficiently tapped up/threatened to ensure the correct outcome...

Said on the BBC that both penalty claims were viewed and declined. Seems very strange that many individuals would get obvious decisions so wrong...

Neither have Brazil or Germany or France... There were promising signs, we aren't going to win it though that much is obvious.

Which bit? Did you not see that horror ball Maguire played and the defence completely shit the bed? No, when was that? First half, straight across his own half about 30 yards from goal, got intercepted by a Tune, give me bloody nightmares him and Stones together!! I think Cahill should be in there.

Let's take a moment to appreciate Hassen's save. That is one of the best saves I have seen tbh.

That was the first poor game Maguire has had for England and he wan't that bad. The only pressure our defenders had was from our making (poor passing / ball retention) so I do not think any knee-jerk reactions are required based on last night. None of them looked particularly comfortable playing 3 at the back and add to that the fact that Walker is never a CH. If there are to be any changes it should be up front (cant afford to miss those sorts of chances) or to the system (only the fullbacks looked comfortable playing it).

Oh I agree, Maguire has a decent game actually, I just think him and Stones next to each other are an accident waiting to happen. I personally would play Walker at wing back or nowhere at all, slot Cahill into the middle and push Stones to the right side. Walker is behind Trippier for me for that spot anyway.

Can't believe some of the negative crap on here. Being an oldish fart I have too many memories of very crappy performances and results by England in opening games to tournaments. We won, you miserable bastards,, we got it out of the way, we will go forward from here. Stop with the negative vibes. This is the oatcake what do you expect off these miserable fuckers haha!

When we play sides that are better than us would expect Southgate to play Dier AND Henderson in front of the defence. True but Walker is a weak link and will be targeted like anything. Walker is a massive liability at the top level. I would move stones to the right and put cahill in the middle. We look good on set pieces and cahill will make is stronger in that regard

I can't be arsed to trawle through 17 odd pages so if this has been posted I'm sorry. But seeing as Pickford was supposedly preferred over Butland because of his much vaunted (and publicised in the national press) distribution, did he once pass the ball out with his feet? I know he rolled it out a couple of times but from what I can remember even when he had a pass on he just twatted it upfield to the big man Sterling.

I enjoyed the game. We were unlucky not have 4 up by half time. Maguire, Henderson and Kane were outstanding. A breath of fresh air and apart from Spain and Portugal they can go further than most people think.
