Commentators mentioned Iceland have more or less the same population as Stoke. So why are they drawing with Argentina and we can’t seem to get a homegrown player in our starting line up? Does the problem lie with a lack of talent, attitude or ambition on the part of young local lads. Or is that they aren’t being coached well enough? It seems like Iceland have an unbelievable coaching set up that’s making the most of a small pool of players. Something Stoke and English football in general clearly aren’t doing. So come on Stoke let’s take a leaf out of Iceland’s book and get the next Sir Stan coming through.

That's not a fair comparison. Part of our population is made up of Burslem.

The days of a local lad coming through the ranks and playing for their hometown club are all but gone!

Facilities.
It's something I would love to see the club, Vale and Crewe do by getting together to work with the council to fund better facilities for all school children in the area.

Iceland is a country. Foreign ancestry aside, they can't have their young lads poached by other, more illustrious nations.

Facilities. Therein lies the problem. They have more indoor pitches per capita than rest of the world. Do not mess with them

No offence SCFCWebby 😉

Each squad has 23 players...so all you really need is to have 23 players playing in top leagues around the world...English players very rarely venture from these shores and many end up not being first choice regulars at their clubs...it may be linked to money Club football is pretty much the same...the pool of players is not restricted to the local area, just as non-local clubs can lure players away My brothers grandson was at Man Utd when he was just 5 years old (lives in Stone)...didn't stay after the first year, but none the less, that is how young they take them on Isn't Arsenal s academy predominantly French? We live in a global football economy

GoBoks, you can’t argue that our academy hasn’t produced. There hasn’t been the next Sir Stan to get snapped up by any team. If you’re thinking of James Wilson at Man U I would say he’s done a great deal yet

The price to obtain uefa coaching badges in england dont help. A B and C license badges cost thousands. local dads running teams for their kids arent going to pay those fee's. where as in alot of european countries its alot cheaper to obtain these. probably funded by the FAs, that way alot more kids get the same high level coaching everywhere.

leicspotter, yeah take your point. Can’t really compare a nation and an area. It does show though that you can do a lot with a relatively small group of players if you get the right coaching in place

If you’re thinking of James Wilson at Man U I would say he’s done a great deal yet Yeah you can. It just depends at what level doesn't it? Throughout the Football League there are our academy graduates. We've got Tom Edwards in the current squad who showed he was good enough for the PL too. Could it be better? Of course it could but to say it hasn't produced is just wrong.

Iceland do what Belgium do - all teams play the same system at every age group right up to the national team. In England the FA don't have the authority to do that and the clubs (and their massive turnover of managers, each with their own ideas) don't have the interest. I'm not suggesting we go that way - but for smaller countries it works.

I don't care how well they do for such a small nation.
20% possesion, parking the bus bull shit is tedious to watch especially on the world stage. Fuck em off and let's see some proper entertainment.

A team that’s never qualified for the World Cup before getting a draw against two time winners with the world’s best or second best player (depending on what side of the fence you’re on) isn’t entertaining enough for you? Teams have to do what they have to do to get results. It got us to the prem and a cup final. Why should Iceland set up to attack Argentina knowing they’ll get played off the park?

What in gods name would port vale bring to the table?. There is one proper football club in the area. We should have facilities/training centres dotted about the city, we should train local coAches and run football schools year round, that is how to do it.it would cost a lot less than what we spent on imbula

I think Iceland have shown v England in the euros And v Argentina at this world cup ...
That having your domestic league , not stuffed full of foreigners , from all over the world And actually letting your own people , who grew up in the country , come through and play for their own teams
Maybe not be the worst idea in the world

It’s about time our players were technically and mentally capable and not financially driven to get out there and perform in La Liga or seria A some have now gone to Germany good on them hopefully they benefit from expanding their footballing education

I am not sure David Platt would have made it today. It took him a long time to come through , in the days when young English players got a second chance
