It's perfectly true. Last season we couldn't beat League Two teams. The sum total of our activity this close season has been to announce that we are keeping Haugaard. This is not the moment for taking things nice and slowly. We need a major clearout and rebuild at the club, and we need to urgently signal our intentions to the rest of the footballing world. So far we've announced Haugaard. Not exactly a great start. Some of us seem to think all we have to is turn up and we will win this league. Such people are in for a massive shock. Just wait until the four goal to kings carry on into the championship, because if we don't do anything and Haugaard is our keeper that's exactly where it's going. Other teams are making moves, we are merely talking. As usual. So which of our Championship rivals have made a move? When was the last time you saw Haugaard play? Do you think it's possible for a young player to improve? Do you seriously expect him to be our first choice keeper this year? Do you seriously think we are not going to sign any players this summer?
You are right with one thing. It won't be easy to win the league. Pretty much everything else you have said is rubbish.
Plus who are all these other teams making moves?

He came across as a man that's learning as he goes along, and makes changes where required. He also came across as very ambitious, and would not tolerate slackers to ruin his growing reputation. Let's see what the actions of the man are before we get too excited.

Just a small thing which struck me a couple of times.
Rowett spoke of 'the club', for example "when 'the club' tell me about Shaqiri I'll know what's happening, I've read the reports the same as everyone else" it just seemed like he is a little removed. I would expect him to be 'the club', certainly with regard to playing staff.
It does make me think Scholes and Carto carry more sway than some of us, myself included, thought they did.
Rowett seemed happy enough with it all but it just felt like he was one step removed from some of the big decisions.
Or am I intellectualising the thing a bit too much?!

Do Scholes/Carto hold the boss cards when it comes to players or is it Rowett? Or has Rowett merely farmed out the removal of the mercenaries to Carto/Scholes whilst he gets on with the important stuff? Whatever the reality though, why is there never a journalist at these things who follows up on what so many of us so quickly latched on to and asks the obvious question? Even a simple query such as "Gary, you say ' when the club tell me about Shaqiri...' Do you make the decisions re players Gary or is it others at the club?" would suffice. I'm just concerned that the lack of responsibility/accountability/culpability we have experienced for some time is set to continue. I suppose in some ways you could call it collective responsibility - everyone at the club is responsible for any success or failure - except that in the case of failure it seems the manager always gets it in the neck and no one else.

All the playing staff are on holiday and he started his job 5 days ago. I imagine he has sat down with the board, both sides stated who they are happy to get rid of and who they are happy to try and keep. He will no doubt have set out what he wants preseason, provided a list of targets with his experience in this league. Week 1 is all about getting familiar with things, meeting everyone he needs to and just settling in. He knows the likes of Shaqiri and that won't stay so no point wasting time trying to convince them. Let the board sort his sale out while he concentrates on the core that want to be here.

Scholes does, Cartwright doesn't. Cartwright has zero involvement in players leaving and has zero involvement in transfer fee negotiations. That's all Scholes.

Should be sorted in next week or so. Going down a slightly different route. Some guys will come with him, some wont. Ta Sounds like Andy Quy might have got a reprieve then. That would be a shrewd move in my opinion. Quy wasn’t part of the Hughes set up

Ta Sounds like Andy Quy might have got a reprieve then. That would be a shrewd move in my opinion. Quy wasn’t part of the Hughes set up I agree but his position would have been untenable if Rowett had have brought Kevin Poole with him, who had followed him round everywhere since his Burton days. It looks like he might bring Summerfield and Sale as his assistants, as those posts appear to have been filled at Derby by Fat Frank's men. But the others (including Poole and possibly Rory) it appears not. Perhaps the delay is us waiting to see who Derby ditch so that we don't have to pay them even compo for poaching more of their current employees.

Great point with regard to the obvious 'follow up' question. It's like a long hop at cricket waiting to get whacked to the boundary but it doesn't happen, no one ever, ever asks the obvious follow up Is it because these conferences are run like PM's question time and you just get one go on any topic or is it because the journos don't have the presence of mind to dig deeper I honestly don't know?

I personally believe that many journalists have an unwritten code of conduct for these things which basically boils down to "don't rattle the managers cage otherwise he might get upset, storm out, ban us from future conferences/interviews etc. Those that ask "indelicate" questions run those risks and we see the result every now and then. I certainly don't think its the journalists not having the desire to think or dig deeper because I'd wager everyone in the room including Rowett were aware that the obvious question was just begging to be asked. Off the point slightly you might find the youtube clip below amusing if you have never seen it of how even the most mild mannered manager can get upset when a journalist somehow asks just the right question. Yes folks this really is the gentleman we know as Roy Hodgson and I have to say, let have more of that Roy!

I don't think you're over intellectualising it all mate. I immediately thought the same thing, and as Ygor says above, I thought for sure it was ripe for a follow-up question. I think I even was going thru that question in my mind as the presser continued on. Didn't he even expand on that saying like, it's why its so good here that people above do all this work and I can focus on the team? i cant remember exactly... Saying that, Rowett strikes me as a man who is a straight shooter and would have no problem telling Carto and Scholes what's on his mind. Bit like TOny was.

We've employed a manager who has never been promoted. It's completely irrelevant though isn't it? Tony Pulis had never been promoted to the Premier League when he did it with us ten years ago. Paul Lambert had never been relegated when he did it with us last season. Not having done something in the past has no bearing on whether you can do it in the future.
