Mornings Stokies.
So I'm doing the Sweepstake in work. In the past, for the Euros etc, I've just got people to pick a team from the hat. This year though the teams aren't particularly "sexy", and if the first few people manage to pick out Brazil, Germany etc then I'm going to be left with a hat full of unsellable tickets like Peru (no disrespect to any Peruvian Stokies that post!).
So how is everyone else running theirs? Is it worth putting each team in a sealed envelope for example and just getting people to pick/sign an envelope until they are all sold? Are there any other ways to do it?
Also what's a decent stake to bet, I'm going to go for £5 a ticket, but not quite worked out how we are going to split the pot. I assume there is a 3rd place playoff this tournament as per usual?
Help me fellow Oatcakers, you're my only hope (well, you and Google).

I’ve done one but added in 4th place and top goal scorer to keep the interest up and add more prizes.

I've done 16 participants at 5 euro a go. split the 32 teams inot 4 pots in order of rank. everyone gets 2 teams. if you draw a top 8 ranked team, your 2nd team comes from bottom ranked 8.
2 prizes; overall winner from top 16 ranked; team from bottom 16 ranked that advances furthest

Obviously the higher the entrance fee the more prizes you can make. I’ve made a £2 a go one at work for charity so could only stretch to paying out on the winner but if you can afford it it’s good to pay out on the winners, runners up and third and make a prize for the team with the least points (and least goals if necessary) in the group stage so that even Iran, Saudi Arabia etc have a chance of winning something.
I would also recommend the envelope way and opening them when you’ve sold them all or on the 14th. If you’re handing the envelopes out to be opened by the participant get them to sign the seal of the envelope when they buy one. If you’re opening them, get a few people to watch you doing it!

Sealed envelopes until all sold, then don't open envelopes until Friday game. 5x32 - £100 1st £40 2nd £20 3rd DONE We've done similar. Used sealed envelopes, write your name on the one you pick, then the person doing the sweepstake keeps all envelopes till the semi's, then hands them out. None of us has a clue who we've got.

I'm running a sweepstake "league" at work
£10 a pop Random team but doing a full league table with points gained / lost for various things Winning Scoring Conceding Red cards Penalty kicks Hat tricks
So league winner may not necessarily be the World Cup winner. Makes it a bit more interesting and levels the playing field a little bit

So if someone does draw Panama, Saudi Arabia etc.. still got a chance of getting something.

Always an issue with sweepstakes where the winners are coming from a small group of teams.
If you do it randomly and winners are the teams that do the best, there are 25 or so who know they are out from the moment the draw is done!
it's nice to mix it up a bit with secondary prizes that evens things up slightly.

Don't put Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Belgium into the hat until nearly all are sold! Make sure you make your pick at the end!

So what I've decided on is doing the envelopes, and then I'll open them all along with some "official adjudicators" once they are all sold, just hope I don't get Brazil so it looks like a fix!
I've gone for £5 a ticket and going to pay out for top 4 by splitting it;
£80 £50 £20 £10
Next tournament though I'm definitely going to look at adding other elements like some have suggested on this thread so keep the ideas coming if anyone has done theirs any other way!

We've got an office of 18 people, so I've set it at £2 a team, with the prizes £50 for winner, £14 runner up.
As for the draw itself, people have selected a number only, 1 to 32. Once all the numbers were selected, randomly drew the teams out of a cup. IE - Argentina were the first team drawn out, so they were team number 1. Portugal second team out etc etc all the way down to 32.
That way - absolutely completely random, no accusation of bias or unfavourable to those who weren't about when numbers/teams were drawn; no pissing around trying to shift the last teams when favourites had gone. Everyone was on board with it actually and went very smooth. Also a bit of jokey tension and excitement when drawing the teams out of the cup. Excuse to open up a couple of bottle of wine on a friday afternoon.
