I guess I understand some of the hostility towards Hughes but some of the venom spouted by a few is dramatically over the top. He produced the best football I have seen from SCFC since the Hudson/Greenhoff era. Yes he was major to blame for our demise but a big part of the blame has to be pointed at the board. 3 years maybe 4 maximum is the right tenure for a manager, then you need fresh ideas. The board didn't seem to understand that. So 3 year contract at Southampton seems a good call from them. I think he will do OK. No hate from me.

£50 million on 3 players nowhere near the first team squad say's different, he spent money but he spent it on shit. That's scouting but imbula was class for a game then couldn't be arsed .wimmer everyone is shaking the heads at that n can't believe we could recoup 10 million for him he is dog shit. Some players don't work. 50 million on Torres world class striker at the time did Chelsea know he would turn dog shit some players just don't settle or gel into a team. Our squad needed alot more funding fact .Hughes wanted Bauer etc at the start of the season who knows how it would have turned out. What is annoying is the board apparently willing spend 50 to 80 mill this season (we will see) should have done this in the prem.the board tried cheap with the squad n then Lambert n it bit us on the arse. Good luck Hughes thanks for some of the best games I've seen but now Gary rowetts barmy army Hughes scouted all three ! £50 million on three wasters fantastic work, wing back system with no wing backs was that down to scouting ?

Southampton won't be hanging back from the trigger unlike Stoke, he'll be out of there no doubt but he'll not relegate them like he did us, KAAAAAAAANTS!!!!! Lambert relegated us. Ranks in the top 2 of worst managers at Stoke in the last 40 years. Just what were the board thinking? I don't dislike either of them but they both relegated us. Points per game over a full season would have had Hughes on 34.5 and Lambert on 33.1, so there's not much in it. We improved when Lambert took over in my opinion, but who knows - if Hughes had stayed maybe we would have had a worse goal difference but the couple of extra wins we needed.

All the Hughes haters yes it went stale but how much was he pissed off with the board .we played some of the best football we have seen n then the board got complacent thinking we were bang on safe and could do it on the cheap. Yes the football went rapidly down hill but he wanted players Bauer lemina gabbadini at the start of the season the board got cheap options in or didn't bother. So yes the football turned crap but to me this is all down to the board 5 years in the making being in the bottom five of spenders all that time .you cannot do the prem league on the cheap as it will catch you up eventually Your love of Hughes and his team would suggest you might be somehow connected to his regime at our club🤔He will RUIN Southampton eventually just like he ruined us and QPR so run along and worship your master

I got pilloried on here for constantly quoting the 3 x 9th place finishes he achieved. I supported the club giving him chance to turn the bad situation round, he had earned it IMO, but he was let down by the very players he chose to chase after. Notably Imbula and Berahino, but Arni didn't repay the loyalty Hughes gave him, and Diouf never really worked out successfully having chased him for over a year. By Novemebr I joined the ranks of those who thought he had had enough time to turn things around. The Swansea victory gave me false hope, but the West Ham defeat was the last straw. Our grand children could be be looking back in 50 years time to the Hughes era being the second best period in the club's history.

On the one hand, it's time for us to move on. On the other hand, this tosser basically poured petrol over our house and set it on fire, got rescued by the fire brigade before he suffered any consequences himself, then found free accommodation in a nice hotel while we burned to death. Now, because he didn't also burn down the hotel, the national papers are congratulating him for being a brilliant firefighter and the hotel owners have rewarded him with the key to their executive suite for the next three years. Southampton weren't even in the bottom three when he took over. Great escape my arse. We weren't in the bottom three when he left either.... We were 18th before we played the Man United away game immediately after Hughes was sacked.

I imagine one of the aspects of his time here that puzzles Hughes is that for some reason, the supporters as a whole never really took to him. People were happy with him as manager, but he never received the level of support that Paul Lambert received.
Even during the high points of the Hughes era - the back to back wins against Chelsea in league and cup, the thrashing of Man City and Man Utd - the atmosphere was absolutely moribund. Large parts of those games were played out in silence. It wasn't uncommon for there to be some dialogue between Hughes or his staff and supporters behind the dugouts. The protests at the end of his reign were more fierce than anything Pulis faced, and he certainly never inspired the marmite-like response that Pulis did.
I'm not saying that the supporters didn't like him or respect what he was doing when times were good, just that I don't think the two parties ever really clicked. Ive no idea why, it's just an observation.

I thought he was an un-inspirational deluded bore. No wonder he could not get the players fired up. And as for that mumbling Bowen he could not even remember who was playing without constantly referring to the team sheet. -urgh.

But when he was actually sacked we were 17th and things got way worse after The knife edge between 17th and 18th didn't mean an awful lot in January really. It was obvious Hughes was on the slide well before last season started and the owners got it badly wrong by keeping him in the summer. Would he have kept us up if he'd stayed? We'll never know but I can't see that he'd have got less wins than Lambert did that's for sure, although it's extremely likely we'd have been thrashed a fair few more times under Hughes. Not sure things got way worse, to be honest......Hughes was presiding over an ill disciplined mess when he left and we were in deep deep trouble. Ultimately the board carry the can for allowing our relegation to happen as far as I'm concerned.

I'm really interested to see how much autonomy Rowett has with making signings and the prices we pay for them because the signings have been a lot suspect. Coates and co should either have kept Hughes till the end of the season or got rid of him much sooner. I hope and expect they'll dig deep to get us up.

We've been humiliated by worse teams over the years Crapster it just stuck in the craw more because of the lack of movement by the board in sorting it out. As it goes they may as well have kept Hughes, couldn't have finished much worse. H

I do agree, Hughes completely lost the plot and fully deserved the sack. The only issue I had at the time was a lack of credible replacements and the fact that Lambert was appointed was a shocking call by the board. As Glasgow said earlier in the thread, the team was strengthened considerably with the signings of Badou and Bauer. Any team containing Butland, Bauer, Ryan, Indi, Allen, Badou, Choupo and Shaq shouldn't be getting relegated. Yes Hughes is culpable but Lambert ultimately led us to relegation playing the some of the most turgid one dimensional football I've had the misfortune to witness. Lambert was an unmitigated disaster of an appointment.

Here they are the 3 Butlins redcoats checking in for another holiday camp job Maybe in some convoluted Breaking Bad scenario they're all big time money wasters and need a decent severance pay to pay off the mobsters every three or four years and this would explain Hughes three 9th placed finishes and then an appalling 4th followed by an insanely destructive 5th I bet he was thinking: "What the fuck do I have to do to get the sack around here?" 😁

Not sure how to take this comment from MH taken from SFC website especially as he apprearred to have had patience in chasing our prolific (not) goal scorer
“If the last four years have taught us anything it is that patience is a virtue, when it comes to signing players and managers it is vital that the club keeps it's dealings private to ensure that things are not compromised, that is the right way to do things, although some fans seem to thing that the club should publicise and make announcements on a daily perhaps hourly basis”
I’m not accepting by inference that he was not fully complicit in all SCFC transfers.
PS. What’s happened to Hoss Cartwright, all been very quiet in the run up to, and re recruitment of GR

They've effectively just injected themselves with aids. You were warned. Give it a few years and history will repeat itself. You couldn't be more wrong. Southampton sacked Puel after he finished 8th and got to the League Cup Final. At the first sign of the team declining they will sack Hughes, long before it becomes terminal. In the meantime I fully expect him to achieve his 7th top ten finish next season.
