Our last league win at Anfield was on Friday the 20 th of March 1959 in the old second division. The game had a 7.15 p.m. kick off because the Grand National was on the following day. According to a Liverpool web site our team was Robertson , McCue , Allen , Asprey , Thompson , Cairns , Howitt , Anderson , Wilshaw , King and Wallace and our manager was Frank Taylor.
In the 1958/59 season I was an 11 year old living in Devizes in Wiltshire after leaving primary school in Blythe Bridge. On the night of the game I was in my bedroom reading comics ( that's what 11 year olds did in those days ) listening to our valve radio waiting for the result of the game. The result came through as Liverpool 3 ( instant gloom ) Stoke City 4 ( elation ). I was so excited that I couldn't wait to tell my school pals when I next saw them. They couldn't care less as they were all Swindon Town fans.
Our goal scorers were Bill Asprey , Dennis Wilshaw with 2 goals and a Liverpool own goal. The Liverpool side included Alan A'Court who was our caretaker manager for one game when we lost at home 2 - 3 to Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup.
p.s. I presume that many of you wouldn't understand the term ' valve radio '. Back in the 1950's most radio sets were operated from the mains supply and included electronic valves such as diodes , triodes and pentodes which were about the size of light bulbs and used to rectify or amplify electrical signals. In the first year of my Physics degree in 1967 we had to answer questions on electronic valves. In my final year exams we had moved on to answer questions on bipolar transistors.

Still gets around the park well in all fairness.

Pretty soon you'll need regression therapy or Doris Stokes to recall our last league win at Anfield.

Happy days.

I remember the old valve radio. We had one, and I used to love listening to four way family favourites. My favourite song in those days was, The Story Of My Life, sang by Michael Holliday, a song that I still love nowadays. It seems that we have a very poor record against Liverpool. Over the years I think we have fared better against Man Utd. It seems that way to me anyway!

I was nearly 1 year old then.
Remember it well. Sat in the back yard with me dad (he was nine and a half) sipping bottles of barley wine waiting for the pigeon to come back with the score.

I was two and stood in the kitchen sink on Sandford Hill when the result came in.
It must have been bath night!

Programme tokens ! Remember them - collected in the vain hope that they may be needed for some big game come the end of the season. Strangely never seemed to be an issue at Stoke !

I remember some great late 60's contests at Anfield, with the Kop very often applauding the performance of Gordon Banks, especially that day he then went on to have his accident. We still didn't manage any wins even with him in goal.
