Are they worth the time and effort? The only likely success in the current set up is Campbell and he cost £750.000 from another academy. Tom Edwards has half a chance but has now fallen behind both Bauer and even Glenn Johnson. We'd all like to see local talent represent the club but it doesn't look like happening any time soon. Maybe we should just scrap the academy and employ scouts?

Those scouted would need age-specific development.

Yes.
Harsh on Edwards as ultimately he's a better option than Johnson and the manger is a moron.

Need to have some brilliant staff (scouting and coaching) to make them worthwhile - as they are in short supply the simple answer is that generally Acadamies are not worth the money invested in them

Crumbs I didn't know we'd paid a significant fee for Campbell.
Another one for the burgeoning 'bish bosh I've spent all me dosh' pile.

Yes I suppose three quarters of a million quid is just a chunk of change in our premier league spending splurge. A hand shandy with a cheap prostitute rather than a full blown affair. Having said that it will be more than 10% of our entire media rights revenue in the Championship so I can't see us doing this kind of thing again in a hurry. And I suspect Denise Coates is a 'many a mickle make a muckle' kind of a person, that's how betting companies make their money.

Still worth having an academy but ours need to make better decisions.
Not sending Shenton out on loan during the 2015-16 season, Therefore stunting his development. He'll be 21 and will only have had half a season at Wrexham to show for experience.
Making Ngoy the '19th' player in the matchday squad, so he won't play youth games but will travel with the first team and then often not make the bench.
Playing Wimmer & Berahino in the u23 side, Taking away opportunities that younger players could have.

Playing Wimmer & Berahino in the u23 side, Taking away opportunities that younger players could have. There's definitely a lot of faults with our academy and the system in general. But the talk of shutting them down is just madness. The current crops of English players that the academies are creating are the best in the world as shown by the results in the respective youth World Cups. But that doesn't tend to show where it matters and that's in the progression of these players into top flight professional football. That is changing though as more and more younger players do seem to be given a chance a lot earlier in this last season than others. That has to continue. Or they will quite rightly carry on going abroad (which I think is a good thing anyway tbh).
