I know this debate is talked over and over. Well this isnt really a debate.
Seeing Ronaldo's Bycicle Kick the other night.
I saw this this norning.
Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as runaway leaders Barcelona equalled the La Liga record of 38 games unbeaten with victory over Leganes
Lionel Messi is the first player to score six direct free-kicks in a La Liga season since Ronaldinho in 2006-07
Now this isnt a question of who is better. My question is how much better are these pair compared to everyone else. I mean shake the hands of then both. The consistency over a number of years. The level of performance they both put in to be best. The records they constantly break. They are just an absolute joy for the game. Fair play to the both of them. They deserve all the accolades and awards they get.

Oh the days where we thought we might turn over a gem, develope our own, try to hold onto our jewels.... Remember those phrases??? We will be loaning reserves from any Tom dick and Harry in the championship.... Burnley's reserve keeper on loan... Fantastic (cry)

I feel sorry for both of them. Well not sorry, but you know what I mean.
If they were 10 years apart they’d both be undisputed best in the world. Unfortunately neither will have that accolade

We are lucky to have such players in our era. Its very hard to choose the best player, but for me Ronaldo shaves if as also a world class header of the ball. If the 3rd best ??? Is Naymar then they are way ahead of ecen him.

Messi and I think it's pretty easily too.
Both are fantastic players though.
And what have done superbly is adapt throughout their careers.
Messi has played all over the front line and out wide and Ronaldo's transformation from winger to number 9 has been supreme.

Why does one have to be better than the other.?......they are both in the same breath as Pele, Maradona, Mathews etc
Just enjoy them both

I think it's a little sad how it's all Messi and Ronaldo both fantastic world greats but..... I think their longevity is the real amazement for me. A few years ago it was spread amongst Ronaldinho, Brazilian Ronaldo, Zidane etc etc, there were many more to cloud the jusdgement of The Ballon D'or now one of these two could be out for 8 months and still come 2nd.

What is this 'era' ?
I mean, both Ronaldo & Messi were playing when Ronaldinho, Fat Ronaldo and Zidane were still playing.
Neither are as good as they were for me. Fat Ronaldo especially. He is the best football player to grace the game imo.
Messi & Ronaldo have also been lucky enough to play through recent changes to the game. The less contact allowed and more focus on letting players carry the ball for example is a massive difference. Subtle in the grand scheme of things but it has allowed many more flair players to shine through in the last 5-10 years, no doubt about it.
It also allows these players to maintain fitness better etc because of less knocks and injuries. That said, CR7 has always lived the life and is probably the fittest man alive health wise.
Meh, I dunno, it's not possible to definitively answer properly ...

They should both make player-cam documentaries set to mogwai soundtracks like Zidane.
Not because it would help anyone make a more informed judgement but because the world needs more of that kind of thing.

Ronaldo is superhuman but Messi is supernatural.

Zlatan knows Zlatan is the greatest. Zlatan talks out of his arse but the world let's him get on with it. You say that yet he's dominated nearly every country he's played in and managed to score a bicycle kick from 30 yards out playing for one of the wankest international teams.

I think what I find most staggering about Ronaldo in particular (and if pressed on the matter of who is the better I'd always opt for Messi,) is his staggering appetite to continually improve his game despite enjoying all the accoutrements of superstardom for well over a decade, the man is relentless.
I read an interview with Gary Neville during which he talked about Ronaldo's unique dead ball technique. When he first signed for United he didn't possess a direct free kick method to speak of,couldn't take one for toffee,he spent hours and hours developing it,his desire to be the best was insatiable, ditto the work he put in to honing his physique, and it's that drive and accompanying work ethic that in Neville's opinion was/is always overlooked.
When you look at the reaction of Zidane t'other night, and the way Barcelona players, many of them 'greats,' respond to some of Messi's goals then you just know the two of them inhabit a footballing universe of their own.

The best players I’ll likely ever see in my life, people can mention the likes of Brazilian Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc but no two players have ever been this unstoppable for this amount of time like Messi and Ronaldo have, I don’t get drawn into the debate on who is better, I just enjoy watching two of the most talented players the game has ever produced.

Was only discussing this in the pub lunchtime and after a few different viewpoints Most of us said Messi on the fact he is more of a team player He passes the ball more often to a fellow team mate if they are in a better position Where as ronaldo tends to shoot first and worry about others later

^^ He didn’t have the same technique at all He did, just from the left foot. He is famed for a few unbelievable benders but most of his free-kick specials were the same technique Ronaldo copied. Bale does it better than Ronaldo too.

^^ He didn’t have the same technique at all Yup. He'd just swazz it with the outside of his boot. Ronaldo hits it straight on, under the ball on the laces and nowadays almost always into row z.

Roberto Carlos could knuckle ball, but Ronaldo's technique is very much different. They hit the ball above the centre and then stop your foot dead like a whip. Then the ball moves around in the air dipping or moving side to side. Robert Carlos is a fabulous free kick taker, much better than Cristiano.

Bale does it better than Ronaldo too. They bent because he put an incredible amount of spin on it with the outside of his foot. Ronaldo generally pings it square on with his instep which causes no spin at all, but an unpredictable trajectory in the air just like the old plastic flyaway balls. Two completely different - in fact in a way, opposite - techniques. Edit oh sorry i misread, you’re saying most of his free kicks weren’t like that... well I dunno about that
