With all the talk we had from our esteemed leaders about bringing on our young talent and "self sufficiency" who in your opinion was the last decent player we had progress as a regular first teamer and you could see a good player in the making?. Personally I would have to go all the way back to Andy Griffin.

Edwards looks a decent prospect. The worry is that a lot of them seem to go out on loan and not really shine which suggests they are not good enough .
They need proper football once they reach 18 not sure the u21 and u23 leagues are any use

It is indeed an embarrassment considering the money and all the back slapping that went on. The general concensus seems to be that it takes 5-10 years for an academy to reap its rewards though. We’ve been Category One since 2012 so the next couple of seasons will show us if it was worth the effort I guess.....

We’ve been Category One since 2012 so the next couple of seasons will show us if it was worth the effort I guess..... Especially as at least five or six of them (Ngoy, Verlinden, Sweeney, Edwards, Tymon, Telford, Campbell?) will be in the first team squad next season, with all the departures.

Wilko possibly yes. Shotton, not for me. I think Shotton wasn't a bad squad player, could play down the right and I'm sure TP chucked him up top once or twice as well - didn't he score a dodgy winner at the Borethorns once upon a time too?

If we go into a Championship season with the idea that our current crop of youngsters are going to have a significant role then heaven help us. As has already been stated just look at the impact they have when we loan them out !!

Take your point Prestwich, however, Griffin was sold in 98 when Kamara was at the helm so even before the new academy the lack of young players coming through was atrocious. This is made even worse by the fact we have spent and wasted money on some utter shite!.

Wilko possibly yes. Shotton, not for me. Wilko possibly? The bloke was a regular in a Premier League side and until recently the best right back we've had in the Premier League.

And away at Hajduk Split in the Europa league. That's right - that was the 2nd leg right? Yeah. Kenwyne Jones scored in the first leg and we then went to play on a plastic pitch with Danny Pugh (!) scoring a fourteenth minute winner in the next round.

Alright then, Wilko yes. Hissy fit or what?. Probably but the lack of respect he gets for his talent fucks me off. He was a late developer but I'd agree with Wilko. I'd say the main reason he gets overlooked in youth / academy discussions is that he didn't become a regular until the second half of the 2007/08 promotion season. By that point he was coming up to his mid-twenties and it felt like a lifetime since he made his debut under Gudjon in the Auto Windscreen Shield (2001/02) If we're talking a teenager breaking through and looking something special then I'd go with Griffin, or (at a lower level) O'Connor's first full season. Both were prior to the academy days though (more youth / YTS?)

Does the academy come under the direct stewardship of the men who brought Wimmer, Imbula and Berahino to the club?
So far it has been a huge disappointment, if not the the spectacular waste of money that our 3 misfit signings have been.

I agree that one or two players have come through the academy but this can’t compare with say Southampton or even Crewe. Shouldn’t we just close it down?

I thought that the whole point of academies is to prevent us from spending (wasting) money on players such as Zimmer, Imbula,Berahino et al... What's the point of having an academy otherwise!?
