To call out the bias, I liked Mark Hughes and was one of the last calling for him to go and I was completely underwhelmed by Paul Lambert. I cannot see any managerial attribute where Lambert is superior to Hughes, hindsight is great but letting Hughes go when we did without a suitable replacement was a monumental error. We are in no better position than we were under Hughes and we have given Lambert a 2.5 year contract. Style of football: Hughes (although it was dire at times) Man management: Hughes Tactics: Hughes (poor at times but better than Lambert) Media performance: Hughes Transfers: shocking under Hughes but nothing to compare with yet. Dress sense : Hughes (but I'm old school) On paper Lambert appears to have tightened up the defence but I'm reserving judgement on that, the Arsenal game will be instructive. As you can see I'm not a Lambert fan but can anyone really argue that he's a better manager than Hughes

There has been about 30 threads on this Didn't see one particularly analysing (or trying to) the respective managerial strengths of both. Happy for mods to bin if it's duplication

Southampton employed a better manager on a better contract for sure.

The replacement of Hughes has been as shambolic as the player recruitment. The issue wasn't getting rid of Hughes, it's the fact we've replaced him with someone worse. Much like it wasn't wrong to get rid of Whelan and Walters, we just replaced them with shit.

Absolutely not, it was shocking shameful and unacceptable. I've said I liked Hughes but than doesn't mean his time wasn't up, but I haven't enjoyed much under Lambert. Ps Lambert seems like an ok guy but most organisations promote people beyond their capability and than can have serious consequences for performance, we are witnessing the footballing equivalent

I didn't enjoy the result but it was clear to see we tried hard and we missed enough chances to win 3 or 4 games. Same with Newcastle where their keeper got man of the match. There were lots of things wrong under Hughes but replacing him with Lambert was stupid in the extreme.

Dave please for the love of god, i know you liked Hughes but at least be honest with yourself. It was an utter embarrassment. That afternoon was certainly the opposite of 'Hard Work'.

The pretty obvious conclusion is that they're both pretty lame ducks. Lambert's staying no matter what happens between now and May so we'll see what he's made of in the second tier.
Having said that, Lambert's inability doesn't mean sacking Hughes was a mistake, the guy was completely out of his depth and had lost any semblance of the man he was in his first 3 years here.

Berahino aside maybe, there was no lack of effort v Coventry. Every national media report acknowledged that on the day. We created more than enough chances to have won the game several times over. I was far more angry after the defeats v man city, Tottenham and west ham than I was after Coventry.

To answer the op's question. The one area where Lambert beats Hughes hands down is his animation on the touchline, complete with tracky sleeves rolled up in a snow blizzard. The demented gibbon impression is pretty impressive. But many on here like to see a manager supposedly showing passion....sadly it winning us nothing and certainly hasn't influenced the players. I guess when you have no tactical know how in your armoury you have to do something.

There's not a club on the planet who would appoint Lambert and team ahead of Hughes and team.
Well maybe there is just one !!

Lambert is wank but lets not re-write history. We were going down under Hughes and probably would have broken the record for negative goal difference.
We had become an utter fucking disgrace of a side under Hughes. Does anyone need reminding of that Chelsea game or his record signing high fiving his mates after we got bum fucked at Wembley.
Lambert being useless doesn't exonerate what that tool ended up doing to this club.
