Shocking from the England top order again today, thanks to Bairstow and Wood we've managed to make the game competitive at least. Leach looks like he can hold a bat so if he sticks around for a bit tomorrow hopefully Bairstow can push us up to the 320/330 mark.
Massive challenges in the summer for the selectors though, an impotent bowling attack and feeble top order only usually leads to one outcome......

Many of our problems are down to their selection decisions - they have been all over the place for a long time on how to pick a test side.

I can't really see things improving in the short term and certainly not by the summer. There needs to be a big shake up throughout the selectors, team management, and the team itself but it's been the same now for a while with little or no sign of improvement.
Who do they bring in though as the County Championship isn't exactly producing lots of genuine possible replacements IMO.

Who do they bring in though as the County Championship isn't exactly producing lots of genuine possible replacements IMO. Hameed for Cook (who I think will call it a day). Had a poor summer after his injury but showed pre-injury he has the temperament for test match cricket. Stoneman I'd give one more chance, there's a player there and he's a fighter he just hasn't pushed on from his regular 20's/30's. Dawid Malan I'd promote to 3, has a decent technique but more importantly seems to work on his deficiencies and learn from his mistakes (unlike Vince) and Livingston could get his chance at 5. Hameed Stoneman Malan Root Livingston Stokes Bairstow Sam Curran Wood Leach Broad/Anderson We have to plan for life after Broad and Anderson and Sam Curran would bring something different bowling his left armers. Maybe rest one of Broad/Anderson for the Pakistan series with a view to looking at personnel for the India series. That said both teams are very talented so we won't have the luxury of blooding them gently......

Butler can have the gloves.

32/4 and Broad bowling beautifully, get Williamson out and they’ll fold like a cheap suit....

The pitch is as flat as pancake once the ball softens.
Need to try and get a lead of 50 and put them under pressure last innings. Was quite impressed with Leach hopefully the ball will start spinning.....

We need him higher up the order to minimise the times he has to bat with the tail - as happened in this test.

I think lack of preparation has hampered England in this series with no proper warm up games. It would be a bit like a football team starting the season having not had any pre season friendlies. If Cook starts the season well for Essex then I would give him another chance but I would possibly move him down to No.3 and bring Hameed in to open. Worryingly, our two best bowlers are still our two oldest ones.

Looking like a draw. The wicket is still pretty good for batting and they are unlikely to get a full day's play tomorrow.
