Just been listening to Ivan Gaskill reminiscing about his time at the station and some old stories,is it just me that thought it was a far better sports program/team than it is now? I’m pretty sure when I was a lad growing up Tony Inchley and John Abberley were the sports presenters as I tried my best here in Derby to get to listen to reports on Stoke City and goal flashes as they happened. If I wasn’t at the game I could get to listen to Saturday afternoon games ok but as soon as it went dark I’d had it because the MW signal used to flit in and out with some foreign channel, very frustrating 😄 Does anybody remember any other presenters after the two I mention or does anyone have any clippets of old games I could listen to.

Used to live listening to radio stoke sport, the decline over the last 10 years, maybe even longer is shocking.

I remember as a kid back in the early to mid 70s they’d replay the live match broadcast on the Sunday

I remember the agony of trying to get a signal 45 miles away as soon as the dark winter nights drew in. Scenes in our house like an old sit-com with me and my dad trying to position the receiver on top of the curtain rail in the living room which seemed to be the only place that worked! I certainly wouldn’t bother now!!
(didn’t they used to have a supporters panel on a Sunday morning too or am I imagining that?)

Mate I share your frustration of doing exactly the same😄I even used to go outside and sit in the old mans car because for some bizarre reason you could hear abit better.

If you can find out when Graham McGarry left his job as a fitter in Crewe Works to become Sports Editor at Radio Stoke on the back of a few phoned-in reports on bowls tournaments I think you will have your answer.

McGarry took over from Ivan Gaskell in 1992 and has overseen over 25 years of decline! Full match commentaries are the only improvement but McGarry can't take credit for that, Tony Inchley was good in the 1970's, later presenters included Rick Bailey and Rob Mckeon. That numpty McGarry doesn't get that Crewe Alex are no big deal, I work in Crewe and don't know anyone who supports them.

I always remember that from the BBC final score/Grandstand program when Des Lynam would go through the tables I had 'The Way It Is' as my footy related song when was fan of the week on Radio Stoke about 11 years ago with John Acres.. Always reminds me of classifieds on Grandstand & Radio Stoke. Another Bruce Hornsby song 'The Valley Road' Was also used for a time too as was very similar.. Radio Stoke sport fell on Its sword when John Acres got shifted from the role of main presenter. Ivan Gaskell was good back in the day though too.

You can pinpoint the demise of BBC Radio Stoke on the appointment of that sperm-gargling train-fucker McGarry.
I've lived in several different cities in my time including Manchester, Sheffield, and London and their local BBC output is light-years ahead of the laughable amateur hour served up by Radio Stoke.
Other than Arsenal FC, Piers Morgan and people who start whistling the same song that you're already whistling, there's nothing I despise more than Graham fucking McCarty. The utter fucking cunt.

I used to love to listen to Lou Macari interviews during the Ivan Gaskell era. They pretty much just let Lou keep on talking, usually a bad thing, however Lou’s quite a charismatic and articulate fellow and it always made for good radio.

They used to play that claxon/horn thing when one of the 3 local teams scored. Used to drive me mad because then you had to wait to find out which ground they were going to to work out which team has scored. Gaskell and Acres were very good.

I'm finding I'm listening to Signal 2 pre & after match more than Radio Stoke now. It's not perfect but the opinions of match Co commentators like Clive Clarke are far more honest in their opinions concerning things on the pitch which on Radio Stoke doesn't seem to happen as it's generally full of yes men who don't want to rock the boat & upset the regime.
