Of course it would’ve made more sense to buy a winger, but TP and his sticker album of names tended to come before what we actually needed. But at the time that was the most logical role for Tuncay given Etherington hadn’t spluttered into life yet and there were only really two creative roles in a Pulis team (three if he was feeling saucy enough to actually play two wingers and Ric). Had tuncay ever played left wing? Ethers started really well for us, then he had a lull but when Lawrence returned to the team the pair of them were excellent. The games against Blackburn, hull and wba sticking in my memory in particular. Yes. He’d played there at times for Boro and Turkey, though on the left of a front three rather than in a 442. After his Sunderland red card Ethers struggled and he started the following season poorly too. It was Everton away that season I think when he had a stormer and never looked back, and was rightly player of the season. We relied on him (as well as Ric) almost exclusively thereafter.

he had pace, improved us to no end. Him and the king of the free Kick pennant. Makes me sad we used to have proper wingers. Get Sobhi on the pitch Lambo cmon, lets go down with a fight if we are dropping
