& pay his 80K a week wages? for a guy that hasn't scored in 2 years? whats the project on this then? Another career path? Clearly the project would be to get him back to his scoring form, he wouldn't be able to command that kind of fee if he was sacked, you see plenty of crap players still signed in the hope that they'll come good etc. Berahino is about as arrogant as they get, he wont drop his earnings to play, he would rather suffer in the reserves and get paid 75K per week

It seems I'm totally out of step with everyone else as regards Kitson. I saw a very good player whose career was effectively destroyed by Tony Pulis. On the pitch he worked hard in a system which minimized his abilities. Pulis played a near international standard forward as a defender in one game, presumably to punish him. Off the pitch it appears that he couldn't relate to the 'lad culture' fostered by TP. This isn't meant as a criticism of Pulis. That culture has a (limited) value in the football world, but there was a temperamental divide at play. No doubt Kitson came across as an arrogant pain, but he could have been handled so much better. I suspect Eustace and Tonge had similar experiences.

Tone mishandled Tuncay in a similar way.

Oh yeah, Kitson. The secret footballer mole that even wrote about when you had a dump in the changing room bogs.
I would love him on my team.
No wonder Tone sold him down the river, so to speak.

Very interesting chapter in one of the Secret footballer books to be fair, about a club that signed two players in a double deal (one for 5M and one for 6M) from a recently relegated team, where one of the players was made for the style of the club, and one was the polar opposite of the style. Selling club in financial trouble. Buying club manager allegedly got his agent involved in the deal with a 500k payment to said agent.
Sting was due to be published in the NOTW just on the eve of the hacking scandal.
How convenient.

When he first came you could tell he felt he was too good for the club, he had the air of an M4 Corridor snob.
If he wanted to stay at Reading so much then maybe he could have offloaded some of the assets he was overextended on? Got himself a nice semi in Shinfield. I have zero sympathy for him.

What people forget is context. I met Rudgey that summer of promotion at the Brit and he told me no fkr wanted to sign for Stoke. We were going back down and not even Championship players were interested we were toxic. Read into that what you will. It wasn't until much later our stock rose and we were up and running that the dogs home opened its doors properly. Looking back on what we can attract now and some of the shite that was turning us down is a real eye opener.

This is the problem with the Secret Footballer - he can make wild accusations from behind a veil of anonymity, when you have to ask how Dave Kitson would know the intimate details of a transfer like that. If it was idle gossip and he put his name to it, he would (rightly) get sued unless he could prove it. Same with when he tried to smear the Coates family over the Begovic incident at Shrewsbury.

I'd spoke to Kitson the day after his first pre season friendly for us away at Notts County in the old portababin restaurant area at Clayton Wood. Asked him how game had gone & he sarcastically replied, "My necks so sore from looking up into the sky all match".. My initial thought was ok.. you've just signed for Stoke & you clearly have an issue with our style of play which is so well documented had you not done your home work before choosing Stoke & signing up?! He was clearly angry about the high ball into the box style of play, but too agitated by it to be happy with signing up.. Even if it wasn't the style he was used to, to be such an issue so early on didn't bode well at all..
