Silly contrived nonsense to take our minds off the impending doom post of the day...
Thinking of playing players out of position I’m wondering what our “best” XI of players playing out of position would be.
Has to be players who have started games (apart from keeper obv) in positions that they and anyone else would recognise as not ordinarily their area of the field, as in not one of their one or two favoured positions. I don’t think you can really have Shaq on the left for example, because he’s pretty comfortable across the line, or Cameron in midfield because he’s such a utility player anyway.
So without thinking too much about it.....
GK is a silly one but we’ll have the Beest there for the sake of argument
RB we’re quite spoilt for choice - Diouf/Delap/Whitehead/Hoefkens even
LB Huth maybe? He was pretty terrible there but can’t think of anyone else
CBs are difficult - Pieters and another full back or midfielder filling in?
RW Shotts aka the new Gareth Bale
LW Ric? Did he play a couple of games there?
CM Clive Clarke (I always thought it was his best position 😬)
CM Bjarni
FWDs are also difficult... did Hooky play a game or two up front? And I'll have Bojan cos he's not a striker.

Muniesa as centre back, woodgate as right back.
What position did/should Marc Wilson play?
Pericard as a footballer

Alan Ball chucked George Berry up front one game.

Woodgate RB, Shotton as a striker. The idea is to make it as good a team as possible!

Muniesa as centre back, woodgate as right back. What position did/should Marc Wilson play? Pericard as a footballer Muni thinks of himself as a CB first and foremost though... Marc Wilson probably counts as out of position wherever he played...

Carl Asaba on the right and Chris Greenacre on the left wing terrorising full backs throughout the Championship.
Cresswell left wing?

Still believe Bruno would be a more than decent DM, best we've got. And if there's no room for Ryan in the back line I'd put him up front against the Mancs, or DM.. Or Crouchie as a No.10 with Shaq as the wee man running off him. For the purpose of this exercise... summat like.... Haugaaard{?} Cameron Zouma Pieters Ramadan Shawcross Bruno Staffy* Bauer Crouch Shaq *only because I'm not entirely sure what he is yet.

Didn't we once start with Ryan at right back at Blackburn? For quality "out of position" I would go for Mame at right back and SJW on the right wing

Did Asa Hartford as caretaker manager use Razor at right back against Hull, and he played well in a 3-0 win?

Surely Wimmer at left back? Stafy at LM might come close.... But then again didn't Hughes play Adam at LM? Could have also put the forgotten one (Ireland) there at I'm sure Hughes shoved him to LM at some point in his desperation.
Ryan upfront springs to mind... Berahino would be a good shout for CF also (shockingly)

Didn't gleghorn go in goal. I'm sure he did when we wore our pop purple strip in around 1995
Anyone confirm??

I remember The Oatcake match report-and it questioning why he had been called on the backpass rule-when Cranson had sliced the ball that high that it came down with snow on it! (Funny the things you remember!)

RB Cameron. It's got to be Cresswell for the left wing.

For centre-back can I have Brendan O'Callaghan ? - or did he play there so often he stopped being a striker.
I also remember seeing Tony Ford produce a surprisingly good display there when we had a major injury crisis. I think it was against Middlesborough and that John Butler was his partner (also obviously playing out of position but not as far out as Tony.

How about Chris Hemmings at centre-back? Played there quite a few times under Mick Mills. OK at full-back, but was too lightweight in the middle. Mind you, Mills replaced him with Mark Higgins, who was worse!

Thought it would have given him a new lease of life if he had continued to play there. Sadly, Mills moved him back to wide-right midfield where he was pretty awful.
