Interestingly the record today is only 16 seconds quicker, given evolution, training regimes, better footwear, just shows what a milestone ( Pun Intended) the sub 4 really was...

Done on a cinder track with a cross wind of 15 mph as well. Like many people of my age, although it wasn't televised live. we all saw the film of it on TV and on the big screen at the cinema courtesy of Pathe News. A year later he gave up athletics to concentrate on his (outstanding) medical career. One of the last and best athletes from the days when it was very much an amateur sport.
RIP Sir Roger.

They were discussing this point on the radio earlier and making the point that the mile is not as popular as it once was and not raced as often.
