Is it a forgotten art. I watched a couple of gents today having a conversation and one of them was able to talk, smoke his pipe and use his hands to gesticulate all at the same time. Reminded of my grandad who seemed to be able to keep a bowl on the go for hours. Bless him died at 96 clutching his favourite one apparently.

My Uncle Arthur had one of those metal pipes and always did the swan vesta match across it to light it thing, Dad was a Condor man, he didn't smoke much but it was his pipe collection and condor that started us boys smoking. Strange now he's gone that I'm hoping to get his pipe collection back. Including the one with a bulls head and ivory horns as well as a long one with two bowls in the shape of mens heads. Not fashionable now though are they.

Only when one runs out of Rizzla's these days. ie. the other night.
Love the odd bowl of St.Bruno though.
The Meerschaum/clay conundrum.
Pipes are for winners.

I seem to remember that his tobacco was in flat strips and grandad would spend ages crumbling it all up into this old pouch he kept next to his favourite chair. A more content character you'd be hard pressed to find. Survived two wars.

Never been a smoker or have had any interest in cigarettes, but all of the above rings true about pipe smoking. The smell of a pipe is so much better than a fag, and pipe smokers seemed to be happy with their lot in life.
At 50, I still feel too young for a pipe, but the thought of using one is actually appealing to me, not that I'm going to.

Not fashionable now though are they. The "metal" pipe would most likely have been a Falcon pipe. They are still readily available. Great pipes. Often considered to be a working mans pipe rather than an expensive briar pipe. The advantage of a Falcon pipe is that the bowl (made from briar) screws off from the metal base and all the moisture and "goo" can be shaken out, rather than sit in the pipe gurgling away.

A more content character you'd be hard pressed to find. Survived two wars. It's called "flake" tobacco. You can get flake or ready rubbed. Also "plug" which involves cutting the flakes off with a knife. Miners would cut a strip off and chew it whilst down the pit. Condor Pigtail was a popular chewing tobacco.

Pipe smokers always seem to look content Compared to cigarette smokers As far as I know, there has only been one big study of pipe smoking. This was carried out in America many years ago but it did involve thousands of pipe smokers over quite a number of years. The conclusion which was announced by the Surgeon General (the top American medical official) was quite astounding. It was that pipe smokers who do not inhale the smoke, (which pipe smokers generally do not) actually live a few years longer than non smokers. The results of this research are still available online to see.

Never smoked a cigarette in my life-but I am tempted by a pipe.
