What a hero this man is and the guys who have had the courage to come out and speak about the the sexual abuse and indignity they had to endure as young aspiring footballers. Young kids who just wanted to play the game they loved were violated, manipulated and had their childhood cruelly taken away. even watching the Victoria Derbyshire programme is not easy, so its unimaginable what it is for these guys. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09rmxt3/victoria-derbyshire-16022018I hope the footballing authorities will be doing everything to support these guys and its obvious from their demeanours support is what they need after years of bottling it all up. Steve Walters, Chris Unsworth and Gary Cliffe all said that of it wasn't for Andy Woodward they are sure they would have kept this bottled, suffered in silence and taken it to their graves.

I can genuinely see Crewe disappearing because of all this. Dario is still officially suspended by the FA, and has been since this broke nearly 18 months ago, are the rumours of the early to late 90's possibly true?
Unlike Man City, Crewe are still owned by the same group of people that were there back then, and must surely be culpable for the situation. Any of these lads could and in my opinion are well within their rights to now sue Crewe for gross negligence. As an employee of the club, it was Bennell and the club who were charged with a duty of care for all the youngsters in the youth set up at that time. It doesn't take a genius to realise that if a few of them do choose this path, then Crewe will surely be on the brink of folding.
Man City are a different case altogether. While the victims could make a claim against Man City, they could justifiably state that it was different owners and didn't and hasn't happened on their watch, while also at the same time offer a grovelling apology and a small sum as compensation for the distress caused, which of course for City, is a small drop in a very large ocean.
Its the Crewe fans who stand to suffer from these horrible events now, they may lose their club. However these former players/hopefuls will have a lifetime of anguish, that even the justice served will not diminish.

Have you noticed none of the other victims do their press conferences with him. Do a google search for his name and Lancashire Police??!!

Andy Woodward was dismissed from Lancashire Police for an ‘inappropriate sexual relationship‘ with a crime victims sister, this was in fact reported to police as ‘rape‘ but CPS did not bring charges so it was watered down!

Woodward has obviously got our sympathy for what he went through as a kid with Bennell, that’s for sure. He sat on the story for years and years, and then found himself in some hot water for a crime he’d committed and then pulled this out, and went to the media about Bennell. He had it all waiting for when he needed it. The press don’t report this, I suppose it doesn’t suit their story. I am 100% not saying that Woodward is using this to his advantage and I have no doubt that his childhood is having a bearing on him now - but why wait so long to report these dispicable crimes?? Why wait until he needed a smoke screen?

You are quite right about the media's willful negligence in not reporting this aspect of the story. I won't look at Andy Woodward in quite the same way again.

Yes but why didn't all the Saville victims report their abuse until years later, when he'd passed away, must have been 30 odd years for some of them...??
There must be loads of Bennell victims still out there not wanting to admit what happened to them....
Jesus they were only 9 or 10 years old, how can you deal with that years later, the moment when you finally figure out what was actually going on getting older, and you can do nothing about it, it must be hell for them now.

That’s not really the point. Woodward IS willing to admit what happened to him (obviously) but chose not to until he needed something to distract from a (alleged) rape he commited. This part doesn’t suit the media’s story clearly.

I must admit I do find it hard to look at his TV confessionals in quite the same way when you know of their timing and the substantive allegation that he subsequently visited misery of a similar kind on someone else even if you could say they were at least an adult. It's surely the duty of the press to ask him about that but I haven't seen that happen. Perhaps not asking him about this was a precondition of these show case confessions we have seen on our televisions. It does leave you with an incomplete picture that much is for certain.

It's not unusual for abusers to abuse. That is in no way justification. Abuse does tend to generate abuse, like violence breeds violence. That is relatively common and nonetheless tragic and disturbing. Its worth remembering though, whatever the motivations behind his own disclosures, the effect his coming forward had has still been incredibly 'positive' (if that is the right word) for many of Bennell's victims and it is likely that this case wouldn't have got to this stage without them. All of the other victims expressed this.

I would have liked the whole story behind his own personal confession though, that's why I am agreeing with Lost in Translation.

As I understand it Daniel Taylor, the Guardian journo who broke the story, had been researching it for several months and Woodward's story became the first interview of a few others that was published in November. That was his decision, not Woodward's. It just happened at the same time as Woodward's past caught up with him.

That seems all very convenient. So...in your conspiracist theorism the Guardian is then an accomplice? I probably wouldn’t go that far, but they do neglect a part of this which I think is an important part. The facts remain, and Woodward has done the right thing - but the timing of it has got him out of some deep trouble, which I don’t think is a coincidence. The Guardian probably don’t want anyone to know they’re all backing and supporting a rapist.
