Any of you Stokies had the misfortune to break a rib?
I managed to do this on top of a mountain a couple of weeks ago - I got blown over (it was quite windy) and unfortunately landed on my back on a rock.
It was only later that evening though when I discovered what real pain is - when I sneezed.
That hurt!
Big time.

Oh yeah, broke two ages back. Not trying to put you on a downer, but sneezing, laughing, coughing and breathing will all result in excruciating pain.

You have my sympathy mate.
I broke ribs 7 and 8 (lower down on the right hand side) playing rugby many moons ago when somebody fell on me with their knee connecting first. It hurt like hell even when I just breathed and took ages to recover from.

Cracked 2 ribs playing 5-a-side years ago - bloody killed for weeks. Couldn't even turn over in bed without being in agony.

Do they bother strapping them or anything nowadays ? When I broke mine in the 70's they just x-rayed them, confirmed they were broken, prescribed some painkillers which had no effect, and sent me home.
Absolute agony for weeks.

Only difference for me was I had a CT scan instead of an X-ray because they were concerned I'd damaged my spleen (it's a rib at the back I broke). The good news for me is the injury seems to be healing really quickly - I imagine the bone has nitted together well. I was out in the hills again this weekend, albeit staying at low level. Still, some great scenery to be enjoyed. Attachment Deleted

Playing rugby against Fijians. It broke in a maul but I didn't realise at first, until I was struggling to run immediately afterwards. I thought it was muscular and kept turning when tackling to protect the sore side. The opposition soon realised after a couple of minutes and ended up running around me (although I was central).... it wasn't until I trotted off in bewilderment of the pain and difficulty in catching my breath that the adrenaline stopped and I fell to the floor in absolute agony... Bedded down for a few days and then was in pain for a few weeks while dosed up.
I'll never forget it.

I broke two ribs playing hockey (centre half) for my school's Senior XI (just a very few years ago ) The opposing centre-forward towered over me - she was over six feet tall and built like a brick outhouse. She smashed right into me and I slithered down her to the ground like Tom & Jerry do after hitting a wall. And she never said sorry! Broke one of the same ribs about 3 or 4 years ago just doing something as basic as twisting round, reaching for something sideways. Agony for several weeks. Didn't seek any medical advice/treatment as I know there's nothing they can do. As other folks have found, breathing/coughing/sneezing/laughing are all absolute agony for the duration, but you just have to pain it out for a few weeks until it gradually eases off. So, for anyone currently suffering, we all sympathise.
