played the part of The Hairy Godfather in our local pantomime, Cinderella lastnight. I'm not a natural born luvey, but got roped in(Community spirit & all) Anyway, it was a full house & have got the family coming ce soir. Any of you hairy @&$ed lot done any drama!?! Break a legXx My only potential luvvy appearance was to be in a school play, The Thwarting Of Baron Bolligrew, as the wizard. 1979 I think. Instead, I was thwarted and couldn't take part due to (ironically) a broken leg.

It was very good Unfortunately CP is in hospital so the camp guy Chi-Chi did both the fairy and CP’s part My kids loved it. Loads of risque jokes for the adults and full of stoke references. Inc Wilkes being pally with his mate Tom Pope who was there A good night out

I always thought it was a good old fashioned belly laugh. Did he do the annual "Granny Potter is 111 today. Happy Birthday! Oh, hang on it says here she's ill" gag?

We went to the Telford one Saturday evening, same old gags year in year out and we all roared with laughter. Our 8;year old loves it so she’s the catalyst every year for going. I went as a parent/helper on the school pan to trip last year and ended up sat in front row and then penny dropped I was the only bloke at the front so ended up as the stooge for the Dame, which being honest was a right laugh

Our school nativity was on this year surprisingly. Mary and Joseph turned up at the Inn to find it closed due to cash flow issues following recent cancellations. However the owner was a decent sort and offered them accommodation in his annex.
The shepherds wanted to visit but had to stay on their farms to contend with a huge avian bird flu outbreak which, despite being the worst in recent memory, had flown under the radar of most media outlets.
The wise men in their infinite knowledge decided Zoom was for peons and would instead travel from far and wide during a pandemic. They proffered gifts of masks, Pfizer and hand sanitizer onto the baby.
Joseph piped up 'My work mates might be ripping the absolute piss out of me for being daft enough believing her story but there is absolutely no way that's going in his arm without longitudinal health study results'
Fin.

Apart from Jonathon Wilkes is the stoke one normally decent Normally yes. Christian Paterson is a good Dame. Usually 2 production in Stoke area. Wilkes not a part of one of them. Den Siegertz been a regular in the other production last 3 or 3 years and always seems to be touted as the better one.

Wilkes does a good job at the Regent Theatre, occasionally hams it up even camps it up but very very enjoyable. Only but I find weird is when he first appears on stage near the beginning - he encourages even more applause for himself (bit like when his mate Robbie walks onstage) and I always, without fail, think to myself “come on mate, you’re getting paid top dollar for this, don’t get arrogant” but other than that it’s slick, daft, funny + proper Stokie so well done to our decent local Panto, long may it continue. Have tried a couple of the local amateur pantos, their intentions are fantastic re: charity donations etc but in terms of quality not a patch on the real deal at Regent Theatre in my humble opinion!

A good panto season can help fund the quieter times of the year in theatre land. I guess Jonathan Wilkes has found his niche (alongside being a mate of Robbie!) and it seems to draw the audiences in still.
I remember the pantos of the 80's at the Theatre Royal where I was a volunteer. The Ken Dodd one that overran (Mother Goose), Frankie Howerd & his performing hair piece and best of the ones I witnessed was the one fronted by Wayne Sleep. Paul Squire used to appear in a fair few of them.

Theatre Royal was a lovely venue, a little bit smaller and more intimate than the Regent. While we’re on the subject ….. why have two venues in Hanley (Regent + Victoria Hall?) Maybe there was more footfall when they developed both about 20 years ago but I would have thought ONE venue constantly in use (and relatively lucrative?) would be better than TWO venues where a lot of the time one stands empty and some of the time both stand empty.

The Victoria Hall was in use a lot more when Mike Lloyd was promoting there. I remember back in the 80's plenty of bands appeared there but seems less include a Stoke stop on their travels now. I guess there must be a sound business reason why the owners keep both going? Be a shame if either closed, especially the Victoria Hall as that is a lovely venue. The Regent is nice but I remember it more for seeing films at with my dad when it was the Odean!
