Hi all
Long time lurker, first time poster..
First of all thank you to you all for helping an exiled Stokie informed and, of course, entertained.
Converted the (American) wife. If she ever meets Mr Fuller...I’ll be in the bar.
Been with the madness since the late 60s, played with the Southern Stokies and did the minibus thing from Euston in the 80s. Never had the luxury of living in Stoke so racked up the miles over the years. One particular trip which ended up involving Wrexhams chief of police and the Wrexham manager will live in my mind forever. Being offered a flight with Elton John to a Watford away game (had to decline) was pretty surreal too.
So, on to tomorrow, NBC gold at 10, fridge with plenty of Guinness and, I reckon a point (please be 3)

Hello and welcome to you Maryland. It’s good to hear from Stoke missionaries dotted around the world. As you’ve been a watcher for a while you’ll know of the ‘mood hoovers’ to avoid getting entangled in conversation with...they’ll suck the atmosphere out of any situation

Sunset over the bottle kilns, where’s your sense of whimsy and romance....
To answer you Em I didn’t play much, was in the West end at the time so Sunday was an only day off. Plus many a Saturday night you’d go to one of the after hours theater bars “just for one” which usually resulted in getting a night bus at Trafalger Square ar 4 in the morning.
Nick H played in, I think, every game I played down there.

Waving at you in Maryland from about 812 miles away (so says Google) in the mid-Atlantic. Always nice to add another exiled Stokie of long standing to the flock on here - you will no doubt know we have our fair share of flockers on the Oatie!

Maryland as a whole has a very good median average. Montgomery County (buts up to DC) is where the real money is. Over here, lots of blue collar, crabbing and fishing crews. Close enough to DC and Baltimore to commute so that skews it some. Annapolis (state capital) is full of monied, boat owning arse hats. We are a little more redneck here.
Original background was more rock and roll but I have done my share of theater, and whatever pays the bills.

Glad you enjoy the delights of Georgia. Tybee is a regular trip for us and I get withdrawal symptoms if I don't eat regularly at the Crab Shack!

I used to be a member of the Southern Stokies too way back in the late 70's early 80's. Seem to remember playing at least one game for them, was it Hackney marshes? Travelled by train from Flitwick down to London then up to Stoke ( or wherever on some away days). Beef and dripping sandwiches and a pint or two in the club, watch the game, reverse journey and home in time for match of the day. Oh those were the days

Ha..I played a few games for .southern stokies as well...Battersea park was the main venue at the time in the late 80s. I remember one game, the referee looked like catweazel, one opposition player got so frustrated he picked the ball up an bounced it hard on the ground, swore at the referee as being blind etc etc and then picked the ball up again and kicked it out.....the referee gave a throw in !!!!....great days and welcome aboard...

Was Battersea for me too in those days. If memory serves just across from the power station. Played some college games for Hendon (Middlesex Poly as it was then) down at Hacknet Marshes. Never knew what you’d get as a ref. Had some top flight European refs that were rehabbing injuries and wanted the game and the next week it would be Ray Charles. Never knew what you’d get as a pitch either.

Thanks cousin. Love Georgia. Spend time whenever we can in Savannah, Tybee Island and last trip Jekyll Island. Look north, lads... I'm waving to you! I saw a reference to Nick Hancock in the thread somewhere. He came to my wedding in Sept 1988. He was not happy I got married during the season. Losing to Argyle that day 0-4 almost made him happier

Thanks cousin. Love Georgia. Spend time whenever we can in Savannah, Tybee Island and last trip Jekyll Island. I am planning a trip to the US this Summer. Been a few times but planning a trip to the confederate states this year. Roughly drafted. Washington DC-Chesapeake to Yorktown-Richmond-Charleston-Savannah-Atlanta-Montgomery(Civil War + Selma etc)-Memphis-Nashville-Roanoke- back to DC. We both like our history so will be stopping off at any Revolutionary/Civil war sites. Any tips from resident Americans or expats appreciated. What is the tipping % these days in these States? I assume DC is at New York - Chicago levels and the other places slightly less?

I'm currently in Charlotte, NC and I usually tip somewhere between 15% - 20% depending on level of service provided.

I would suggest Greenhoff is God is spot on (on both counts, tips and Jimmy) If you rack up to the bar and are sitting drinking a beer a $ or 2 per is right. 20% will never embarrass anyone and, in general, going out is cheaper than Europe (gigs in Switzerland still make my wallet whimper quietly) If you have any doubt about it chuck the odd extra dollar in.
Karma works lol
