R.I.P. Lovely bloke. This brought me right back to my youth. Anyone who reads my posts will know, that as a young lad, I used to sick up for Blackpool, even though I never went to a game. Due to following them, I read about the Matthews final, and to cut a long story short, I ended up following Stoke City. I've still got a couple of cuttings from those days somewhere. But back to Jimmy Armfield, a sad day indeed, one of my favourite Blackpool players. As I'm typing this, I have a few tears in my eyes, and am not ashamed to say this.

Never saw him play, but my dad did, and reckoned he was the best full back he'd seen - if he hadn't been injured he would have played in the 1966 World Cup ahead of George Cohen. Rated the best full back in the 1962 World Cup, and by all accounts a lovely man. A loss to football.

RIP a true gentlemen.
Took 43 years to give him a medal for being in the 66 WC winning squad. Injured a toe just before the WC and couldn't get back into the side. Captained England 15 times, nowadays we give the England captaincy to anyone who can manage to stay in the side.
Condolences to all his loved ones.

RIP Sir. Superb player and an absolute gentleman.
Scandalous that he was phased out of radio commentary for the likes of Danny Mills etc, always insightful, always fair and generally on the money.....

True gentleman and well liked and respected amongst fellow players and supporters alike. He was excellent on the radio and always gave a true and fair assessment of the game seemingly without bias.
Sad way for him to go in the end.
RIP

Used to just smile and say “we won the World Cup and that’s all that mattered”. And you knew he meant it....

One of the wisest football minds England has ever produced.
People forget he took Leeds to the European Cup Final. In the aftermath he showed remarkable dignity.
RIP. We are less for his passing.

And was royally shafted in the final by some scandalous refereeing.... True, I remember watching the final and the referee was appalling - as I understand he never referee'd in European games again after that debacle. Armfield took Revie's ageing Leeds team and totally rebuilt it, never finished outside the top 10, two more cup semi-finals, and the Leeds board decided that wasn't good enough (!).

RIP Jimmy.
Excellent footballer and brilliant summariser on the radio, as well as being a true gent.
I might be wrong, but I also think he was heavly involved with the FA's decision to make Terry Venables the England manager, who, imo did an excellent job.

As others have said only a radio voice to me but he seemed the epitome of football from a more civilised era where fair play really counted for something. RIP.

Only yesterday I mentioned him in the greatest full backs thread, he was the original attacking full back and a great friend of Sir Stan and spoke so elequently and fondly of him at his funeral. A truly brilliant footballer and a lovely man , the second football has lost in a week after the sad demise of Cyrille Regis , Jimmy should be similarly recognised with a minutes applause.
