Can he cross a ball though? If he can't then we're really not upgrading on Pieters in that sense. He can cross. Not only that it seems he can score free kicks too. It's been a while since we've seen that happen.

OK Who will be the first one to say a song for Konstantinos Stafylidis. This could be a hard one to make up Konstantinos Stafylidis expialidocious He came here to play left back 'Cos of Ekker's lack of focus And we tried young Tymon there and saw he was atrocious Konstantinos Stafylidis expialidocious (Only joking by the way, I don't like slagging off any of our players) That's brilliant. Just change the words of the verse to be positive and it could be great.

Pieters is the only left back in the PL that can’t cross!!!! I love when Erik puts a good ball in the box and everyone screams at me "LOOK HE CAN CROSS" then his next 10 end up going out for a throw in after sailing 10 yards over Crouch's head.

2 fullbacks (one for each side) signed within a week ?

I think Pieters has been poor for quite some time .. but bringing in this other lad as proper competition for the starting spot might be the kick up the arse he needs. Little unfair I think. Pieters is not a LWB and should never be used as such. He is a competent LB and performs quite satisfactorily against average opposition, but will get exposed by top class wingers. We should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water, by which I mean Pieters is quite competent to defend against the likes of Huddersfield and Watford in the must win games. We should not drop him because he is not good enough against the likes of ManC etc. or play LWB. I'm not saying we should get an upgrade if we can, but there are more important priorities to address like defensive midfielder and a goal scoring striker. I think we might have resolved the RB issue and can revert to 4 at the back. To say that Pieters needs a kick up the backside is out of order, there are few in the team who put more effort in or put their body on the line more than Pieters does. Why is it out of order? I've never doubted that he is a whole-hearted player and will put a shift in, but that's not really enough at this level. He hasn't had proper competition for his place and I think it's showed.

Pieters is a solid PL left back, he offers nothing going forward though. I disagree. Pieters offers plenty of willingness to get forward and is up and down that line all game long. Granted his crossing leaves much to be desired but Bauer got great credit on Monday for producing a very pieters type performance. I've always liked pieters. He's a very good full back and if this new lad is better, we'll have ourselves an excellent player. Wasn’t anything like pieters, his cross beat the first man and found a stoke player. I like pieters but his crossing isn’t great. Hope this new lad can give us the competition we’ve needed

Someone who is good at set pieces to play left back Someone with a long throw at right back Massive improvement to the team He could have a club foot for all I care as long as he is an improvement on Pieters!

Stick with 4-4-2 Pieters left back, Johnny the Greek left midfield simples ! I’m not convinced by 442 - our CM is to lightweight for it - who can play together up front. Not sure we have 2 that could work.

If we signed this fella we need to go 3 at the back surely to get the best out of Shaqiri.....? (If not just away from home) Butland Zouma Shawcross Martins Indi Bauer Allen NEW SIGNINGStaphylidis Shaqiri Choupo Moting NEW SIGNINGAre you a fucking mentalist? We've just got rid of that shite No I'm not but thanks for the interest. We didn't have the personnel, but we could sign the players to play the system. Comprende?

Stafylidis, eh? The soviet_onion sarky yet pertinent nickname generator has predicted ‘Staffybullcross’ to be his moniker. Very local- can only be good. And ‘Streptococcus’ if he’s a sick note.....

Reading that back, it does sound a bit abrupt, apologies! I think players have to be at the absolute top of their game to make it work - like Chelsea last season. Even Arsenal are struggling to make it work. Not a system that can widely be used in my opinion.

But 3 at the back has it's merits in freeing off Shaqiri which did work early on in the season, it also means with a decent partner for Allen we don't get exposed defensively.....
