Just watched Liverpool beat Manchester city. The announcers were talking about the Manchester City keeper's role as a sweeper. Two of the four conceded goals (#2 and #4) had Manchester's keeper well out of his box and nowhere near the goal. They might have beaten or drawn with Liverpool if the keeper had stuck closer to his area. With Pep considered to be a footie genius, using the keeper like that seems a little reckless.

This approach carries a risk as with any defender playing it out and when it goes wrong it looks dreadful but Pep's Man City have done OK so far this year using this tactic.

I'd love ours to be able to kick a ball to a bloke in red and white semi accurately.

Yeah I heard that's the first game they've lost. Pep out. Get back in net Ederson.

I was just listening to the announcers going on about the sweeper-keeper, paying attention to see how they worked it and learn a bit about the game. Then I see Liverpool put two goals in the net with the keeper out in no man's land....maybe, less sweeping and more keeping would have worked better for them. The way Liverpool were playing them, I was surprised that Pep would allow the goal to be that exposed. He's already won the EPL but he'll need to fix that in future Champs League fixtures.

I think playing from the back makes perfect sense.
Time after time goalkeepers just lump it up top giving 50/50 balls which end up out as throwins or gifts to the oppo. Training defenders to buy in to this is a whole different prospect

EDIT: However, for Stoke it has been a disaster. Fletcher and Allen receive the ball 20 yards inside our half and they're looking at a 40 yard pass toward Peter Crouch, Xherdan Shaqiri or EMCM.

Give it to a defender/midfielder to do that.

I always enjoy it when a goalkeeper (not Stoke's, of course) tries to dribble the ball past an approaching attacking player.......often ending in a disaster. Sometimes, they should remain in the 6 yard box.

That's the problem. Good system but needs good players to make it work. Hoofing it up field is easier to teach and far less risky. I always think playing out from the back needs a midfield general that can take the ball hold it, pass in any direction. You know Nzonzi
