Rick Jolly died yesterday. For those who have never heard of him he was famously 3 Commando Brigade's senior surgeon in the Battle Field Hospital at Ajax Bay during the 1982 Falklands Conflict. He was decorated by both UK and Argentina for his work to save lives on both sides. The Field Hospital which was a converted refrigeration plant, nicknamed The Red and Green Life Machine, claimed all casualties that passed through the hospital survived their injuries. The medical staff also worked under the constant threat of air attack and they suffered a direct hit by a bomb that failed to detonate but lay in the roof of the plant for many days before it was removed by bomb disposal men. Because all other winchmen were otherwise engaged he volunteered to be the winchman and saved the lives of 4 sailors who had been blown overboard during the sinking of HMS Ardent. Later he worked at RNH Haslar in Gosport and he operated on my my young daughter to clear blocked tear ducts that were causing severe eye infections. He was also the author of Jack Speak, a hilarious look at sailors language. RIP Sir you did well. Attachment Deleted
