08/09 was pure romance. A team of fighters scrapping, kicking and long-throwing Stoke City to safety. I accept I cannot compare without bias as this was the best season ever.

You can't buy passion but you can manage a team that gives what could be called passion and as awful as the football may have seemed to the outsider, pulis football was born and is now a staple of what premier league survival is all about. We traded those morals for a more silky flow of football, too quickly in my opinion but it had to be done. We have a better squad in going forward than we have ever had in the premier league now but our wanting to break away from the roots that got us there in the first place has been our downfall. Which team is better is hard to say as hindsight is to easy to comment on but if we ever become a team that has both of our current and past premier league attributes we would again be a team that no one would like to play against. I hope we can achieve this. We're a good proper football club with good proper fans with a good proper owner.

No it wasn't. We were tipped by everyone to go down and laughed at. Our squad was filled with players new to the premier league. We finished the season just 5 points behind Man City and it was a fantastic season. This was because had a manager who knew what he was doing. I assume the logical conclusion is that we finished above Chelsea because we had a manager who knew what he was doing? Point taken. Chelsea massively under-performed that season hence why Sour face was sacked. We finished above them on merit.

Our promotion team would beat our team now Combine the individual skill of our current squad with the organisation and spirit of the 08/09 team and they would be top six contenders!

Good footballers such as Fletcher, Adam, Wimmer, G Cam, Allen, Pieters , Edwards, Diouf etc. yeh ok. Yes. Put our squad now up against that 08/09 team. A combined XI I would say would be like this: Butland Edwards Shawcross Faye Pieters Delap Allen Choupo Shaqiri Etherington Fuller With subs: Sorensen Indi Zouma Whelan Beattie Ramadan Diouf Faye only ahead of Indi/Zouma on his 08/09 form, i think Indi and Zouma are better players in general. Ethers probably wouldn't work in that system but still. Abdoulaye Faye shits all over any centre half we've had since the seventies in my opinion.

A newly promoted team is hungrier.
Getting promoted to the prem and staying up got players like whelan and wilko set for life. The difference between a 10k week and 30-40k plus bonuses.
It’s a whole different ball game 10 years on.
Beattie and ethers needed it too. Abdy and sorro had been let go all had something to prove. Unfortunately now it’s hard to buy/get the same hunger
If you look at Walters career we gave the massive opportunity and he grasped it. Now we are buying already multi millionaires. The desire is not the same

Rose-tinted glasses? Beattie was only good (and he was great) for us for half a season. He looked like he'd get over 100 Premier League goals no problem, then barely got any closer, and was a way off in the end. That first few months was an example of pretty much everything going right for a striker, whereas for Berahino it's been almost the opposite. We have better players now in most positions, but back then we had a better team. We could do with a couple of characters from that team. Beattie was also absolutely on fire for Southampton for many a year He's number 2 God there after le tiss He was a good athlete ,who basically turned down the chance to swim for England in order to be a top footballer He was no aguero and joined stoke in the autumn of his footballing years A very good player , recognised as a good player by stokies and a footballing God by saints fans

Fuller, Beatie, Aby and Ethrington. All would walk into this side and would keep us up! So would wilko, Rory and Liam Lawrence...as would a 25 year old glen Whelan The fitness, tactical and quality levels of the league have moved up which is why so few English players make it. In the league today Wilko would not last half a game without a red and has nowhere near the required ability on the ball, Lawrence would be way off the pace -remember him away at Arsenal being outrun so badly and the pace is faster now. Glen would also be exposed for pace while Rory would be a useful squad player but neither would be able to handle the pressing that is commonplace when they had possession. Is Ethers better than Choupo? I am not convinced. Aby and Fuller would definitely strengthen the side but that's it.
