There's a cold wave hitting the United States and Canada.
Tomorrow the high where I am in the northeast US will be 2F (-17C) and the low will be -9F (-22C). Wind chill of -25F (-32C). At least it stopped snowing after the big dump yesterday.
I'm sure people in the Midwest United States and non-Pacific Canada are looking at me with envy rather than sympathy 😉

I've got friends in Charlotte NC and Greenville SC and they've both said it's been one of the worst prolonged periods of intense cold and snow along the eastc coast that they can ever remember. They did say they do sometimes get ice storms during some winters but nowhere near as bad as this. Do you normally get much snow in winter in your region if the US ?

The last year two years were relatively tame snow wise. 2015 on the other hand.... It was one blizzard after another. You'd open your front door and it would be blocked entirely from top to bottom in snow. Not that it actually snowed that much in a night, but the wind caused snow banks 8 feet or more. It snowed over 10 feet in total. Most of it came in February which is somewhat uncommon as January is usually the snowiest month. I don't remember it being particularly cold though. It seems like a lot of snowy days aren't that cold. For example yesterday it snowed a lot, but the temperature was higher than it is today when it's not snowing.

It sounds a bit "extreme" for us tender souls in the UK. The whole country grinds to a halt if we have just a couple of inches of snow - roads gridlocked, trains struggle to run, schools closed - absolute chaos. Hope things improve for you soon !

In the boozer t'other night heard a wag say 'Hitler missed a trick, if he'd dropped snow instead of bombs he would have brought the country to a halt.' Suppose the freeze will be heading our way. Have to get sawing again.

When it snows in England, what is the texture of the snow, and does it get above freezing during the day? If it's icy snow that melts during the day and freezes again at night, that's really dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians, moreso than larger volumes of light fluffy snow.

Obviously being an island our climate is slightly wetter/damper. I used to travel on business all across mainland Europe and many places were very cold in winter but the atmosphere was drier so the snow didn't seem as wet and therecwere were no real problems gettingnaround around. Sometimes our weather forecasters advise that the snow will freeze overnight and then it will rain or snow again making it hazardous, but normally it's just small amounts of snow that don't usually freeze that we just can't cope with that has such a negative effect on our road network.

it was -35 with the wind chill Thanks for letting me moan! When you lived in England, did you moan about the weather? What do you think now when you hear English people moan about the weather given the weather you now have to endure?
