I share the general sense of doom and gloom on here right now, but we know how quickly things can change in football.
Regardless of what happens at Old Trafford, if we can claim back to back wins at home to Huddersfield and Watford, the table will look a whole lot different.
Six points from those two games would take us to 26 points in total (which would be roughly on track to the 40 point mark) and probably a good 5 points clear of the relegation places. Even if we were to take only 4 points from those two games, we would probably jump a couple of points clear of the bottom three.
On current form we could quite easily lose both of those, which would be disastrous. However, neither of those sides are better than us on paper. We have already beaten Watford away from home this season, we appear to be their bogey side, and they are not exactly on a great run of form themselves at the moment. Huddersfield are extremely inconsistent and difficult to predict, but on paper we are certainly the stronger side. Regardless of our current form and tactics, we still have quality players like Allen and Shaqiri who, on their day, can be matchwinners. We also have one of the best goalkeepers in the league.
It is probably not exaggerating to say that those two games are the two biggest league games for our club in the last decade. Win those two, and our points tally and league position improves dramatically, some of the pressure is relieved and the players will have more confidence for the remaining battle. From that position, we will most likely battle through to survival and a new manager can come in and rebuild in the summer. Lose those two games and we are probably down. These two fixtures could determine our fate, not just for the remainder of the season, but for years to come given what is potentially at stake here.
I wish the club had done a better job of preparing for contingencies and that Hughes had been sacked a few weeks ago. However, we are where we are. It will be fine margins. If we do go down, lets make sure we go down fighting and we as fans hold our nerve during the two most important 90 minutes we will witness in many years. Football is often full of surprises, and we won't help our cause by writing ourselves off before the battle has really begun.
VISA UNITA FORTIOR.

If you look at the other fixtures while we play against man utd:
Crystal Palace vs Burnley
Huddersfield vs West Ham
Newcastle vs Swansea
Watford vs Southampton
Spurs vs Everton
West Brom vs Brighton
Chelsea vs Leicester
Bournemouth vs Arsenal
Liverpool vs Man City
If results go against us we could be looking at the likes of Newcastle, West Ham,Crystal Palace all pulling clearer from us the gap could be 5 points if those 3 won we would ideally need southampton to lose to watford to keep them close and bournemouth to lose too i feel after that weekends results we will clearly see who will be involved in the relegation battle then that puts immense pressure on the Huddersfield and Watford games.

I have also looked at Huddersfield and Watford. Bourno after too. Three winnable games that if won would get us out of the shit and back towards stability. But we've had that all season. Win this to get back on track. Win this to get back on track. Win this to get back on bloody track. And we never do because we are too flaky and at times too bloody stupid.
Even when we win it's a nervous restless anxious flow of seeping desperation.

We can't beat Newcastle at home so Im not overly convinced we can take 6 points v Watford and Huddersfield regardless of how bad they might be playing right now.
You can bet your bottom dollar that when we turn up we will make the opposition look like Real Madrid.

The key issue is that we are not cut adrift, Coates has discussed with Hughes his strategy for the coming games, it has to be the safest bet now to stick with him.
Peter Coates and the Board though need to try and get a grip on the communication process, continual rumours and speculation in the media are not helping one bit.

We will beat Huddersfield, Watford, Bournemouth and Brighton after the Man Utd game. I'm sure of this. Those 4 games are absolutely ones that had this have been 2 years ago I'd have said absolutely, we can win those 4 on the bounce. But how we're playing at the moment I can't see it Waggy. Maybe 2 at a push. I suspect a max of 7 points from those out of 12, which COULD be okay as long as the teams around get the results that we need. It would be ideal to win those though yes, that would take us to 32 points if we won all 4, on course for 40 points, and pulling away from the bottom 3 hopefully.

The fixtures in March and April are horrendous. We need to pick up a good return of points from the aforementioned games. It could all come down to the wire. The last two games are Palace home and Swansea away

There were games in the Europa League in between them so I didn't notice it on Soccerbase. Like you say though, little or no chance of it happening now though.

We need 6 points from our next 4 games to maintain a 1ppg average we need to give ourselves a fighting chance, and these two games are our best chance of getting them. But considering the games we have coming up we really need to get something from Bournemouth too.
Whoever’s in charge, whoever’s on the pitch, the boys need to get the points in the board, and bloody quickly!
Goarn Stoke!
