The run continues with all our wins coming with less possession than the opposition in all 5🤔

Not to put a dampener on it but that's because we grind out every win, clearing the ball rather than retaining it in backs to the wall style performances. The amount of aimless clearances today that came back at us were nerve shredding.

How many games have we had this season where we have had the majority of the posession?
It's a rhetorical question, the answer is very few.
Guess what I am saying is that it is not cause and effect ,

The run continues with all our wins coming with less possession than the opposition in all 5🤔 Perhaps the fact that we concede so much, not only possession but territory is a major reason that we have only won 5 games all season not a blueprint for future success. When you can't dominate the game with a 2-0 lead against a team that hasn't won for 17 games and you can't look after the ball, can't play the game in their half I guess you're never going to. Hughes out!

Total change from when Hughes first took over...... we even had over 50% possession away at Arsenal.

Probably down to giving the ball away so much
A lack of creativity
Poor confidence with and without the ball
Lacking in midfield

It is the most extraordinary turnaround, In peak-Hughes times we were more or less 50/50 sharing the possession against even the Big 6 in our home games. I know it didn't always lead anywhere but it did make watching our games less stressful. I'm honestly not sure if the change is tactical or simply down to our new personnel?

When we try to open up,we are as leaky as a sieve. No protection for the defence from midfield, and a bunch of statues at the heart of defence. We can't afford to open up, we aren't good enough.

Not good enough to go toe to toe with West Brom, then all concerned should be thoroughly ashamed of their performance of their roles.

The run continues with all our wins coming with less possession than the opposition in all 5🤔 If you ever purchase a football betting system or indeed ask any of the managers what the most important stat is, then they will tell you the greatest guidance to a teams form is the number of goal attempts they are creating/conceding and secondary to this set plays created(corners and free-kicks). Possession has no bearing at all on the result if you are limiting your opposition to fewer attempts than yourself. Pulis built a whole career on the percentages i.e. lumping the ball into the danger areas hoping something sticks, while keeping the 2 banks of four and letting teams have has much possession as they want. Athletico are also pretty good at this, as are a few of the Spanish teams, they know when they play the likes of Barca they will be conceding 70 - 80% of the possession. It is a pretty good guide as to whether a team is about to hit form or about to hit a bad spell. I remember a few years back when Blackpool were in the prem teams were beginning to create obscene amounts of chances against them and shortly after their form changed and they plummeted eventually getting relegated. That said Stoke are pretty bad at creating chances at the moment too, they rarely create more than their opposition, today's stats would suggest we rode our luck a little. The rule being 1 goal per 4 attempts on target, we conceded 7 today while creating 5 attempts on goal, so if we keep this up we could be expecting to score 1.25 goals while conceding 1.75(not taking into account the set pieces) in future matches. You can buy some complicated software to do the math and form predictions, but none of them will take possession into account WBA Attempts 17(7) Stoke Attempts 9(5) WBA Corners 11 Stoke Corners 1
