Last season we weren't great but we looked much more solid than this year. A lot of the players we let go copped a lot of flak here but are we missing their "commitment" or is our demise this year more down to how Hughes sets up the team?
I'd really hoped we push on this year but we look like a dogs home collection of misfits

We may not be missing Imbula but we absolutely are missing someone who can drive forward from midfield

Whelan should have retired, he's been shocking at Villa.

I'd really hoped we push on this year but we look like a dogs home collection of misfits I don't think we've looked overly solid for years. I don't know why that is, it uses to be the high line, maybe it's our chronic lack of pace, now? We could definitely do with some grit at the moment, though.

Whelan should have retired, he's been shocking at Villa. He left Stoke so I haven't seen much of him but I thought after a bad start he'd been playing better lately?

I mean I'd quite like someone in centre mid who could drive us forward, too...

We can't miss Walters he hasn't played through injury. Missed Bards I reckon but that would need to be 442. If Ramadam was supposed to be Arnies replacement then we are bolloxed

Whelan should have retired, he's been shocking at Villa. I work with 2 Villa fans who rave about him (and they are season ticket holders). Opinions eh?

Personally think Fletcher is a much better player. He does look to get the ball forward, unlike Whelan, who was sideways or backwards.

Whelan should have retired, he's been shocking at Villa. So shocking he's the first name on the team sheet every week. Amazing how all these different managers keep picking him game after game considering how shocking he is.

How many assists has he got this season ? his passing is woeful and has been for a while he needs dropping but who do we replace him with ?

Im going off someone that goes every game home and away and the odd game I've seen, they know better than us, and Bruce is basically a poor mans Pulis so its not a surprise he picks him, I had no problem with him when he was here, actually he was my favourite player, that doesn't mean age etc hasn't caught up with him.

He is the type of player that splits opinion, I just think we are missing that type of character around the club. I'm not suggesting he would be playing every week but I'm sure his presence around the squad would shake up a few of our current laid back couldn't give a shit attitude players.

I can't say the midfield has been any better without him, and when he played well we won a few games, can't remember Fletcher having a good game, apart from maybe Arsenal.

Our present problems have not occurred because of the loss of one or two players. It’s combination of cock ups (or is it cocks up?). Hughes inherited a strong team that played boring football and everyone was glad to see the back of the capped one. Hughes brought in a number of very good players that he was able get a tune out of, but they all had issues: either marde arses, injury prone or both. It all started to go wrong when he a) was unable to replace N’zonzi and Huth, b) switched to three at the back but failed to sign wing backs, c) wrote off certain players (esp. CFs) too quickly, and d) played players out of position (see cock up b). These cocks up were compounded by to injuries to Bojan and Shawcross. But all teams have injuries and we had no-one to fill in the gaps they created.

Recently yeah, he used to run at players head down, he doesn't seem to be coached correctly. He was making some poor decisions before, but at least he had courage. Now it seems he plays on tender hooks, scared to death to make a mistake-- lost that raw edge we saw. Thats down to Bowen, not MH...

Like I've said previously, it wasn't a mistake letting go of these players, it's been the replacements that haven't been up to scratch.

He has been starting to show real form at villa,he made a poor back pass that resulted in a Derby goal in their recent game. However most fans were starting to appreciate him apparently. Some people make things up because it suits their agenda. Pathetic really!

We sold an injury prone Jon Walters who has got more injury prone.
We don't miss him at all.

I don't regret letting any of them go, to be honest.
It was time.
Obviously Arnie is a big loss, but once someone was offering him a 5-year £100,000-a-week deal, what could we realistically do?
Effectively swapping him for Choupo was a pathetic bit of business though. Moneyball gone mad from the brains trust, who clearly think they're much smarter than the average bear. You can't replace one of your key players with a Bosman gamble who was still clubless well into August.
And spending his money on Wimmer just compounds the problem and turns it into a heartbreaking summer in the market. Heads have definitely rolled for less.

Never entirely convinced by any of them as Premiership players but Bards doing well at the moment and at least they had the heart that people like Imbula and Wimmer lack. I know Bards would have welcomed Arnie back to the stadium last week with a cruncher if he'd have played against him and I'd have certainly kept him over Johnson though!!

Watching Fletcher ambling about in midfield dies not help matters, was he the upgrade we needed on Glen ?
