Way too early to jump to conclusions. I am sure he probably had a seizure, or got distracted, or maybe fell asleep at the wheel... He looks a decent sort...You know, really peacefull, and on a mission to enrich people culturally. Surely nothing sinister...

He looks a decent sort...You know, really peacefull, and on a mission to enrich people culturally. Surely nothing sinister... Melbourne police saying he has a history of mental illness. Phew that's OK then. A second man arrested who was filming the incident and had a bag of knives. Knife salesman.

This is a cut & paste from the Guardian.
The alleged driver of the car is a 32-year-old man of Afghan descent who was arrested at the scene by an off-duty police officer.
The man is known to police but there is no evidence or intelligence connecting either him or this incident to terrorism or extremism.
Police say he does have a history of drug use and mental health issues and police believe those issues are behind the incident.
Another man, 24-years-old, was arrested a short time after the incident. He was filming it on his mobile phone and was searched by police, who allegedly found knives in his bag. Police do not believe he knows the 32-year-old man or is connected in any way.
Looks like it was all an innocent mistake then. (that's my take on it, not from the Guardian)

I imagine they try to tread as carefully as they can in Oz as there is quite a bit of racist violence that still goes on. I was on a beach in Cronulla around 2006 when a load of 'bogans' (Aussie rednecks) turned up and started laying in to anyone they thought might be Lebanese. It was pretty scary and i guess the authorities will do anything they can to try and avoid that kind of nonsense. They've got a massive population of knuckle draggers who only need the slightest reason to act like arseholes.
Edit: Not to suggest this isn't a major incident. It's a difficult situation to manage.

And tip toeing around it will sort it out obviously, I am a little surprised the Australian authorities are covering up this attack for what it is.
