Liam Allan, 22, was charged with 12 counts of rape and sexual assault but his trial collapsed after police were ordered to hand over phone records. A computer disk containing 40,000 messages revealed the alleged victim pestered Mr Allan for "casual sex". Prosecution barrister Jerry Hayes accused police of "pure incompetence". The charges against the criminology student were dropped three days into the trial at Croydon Crown Court when Mr Hayes took over the case. Mr Hayes said there had very nearly been "a massive miscarriage of justice" which could have led to Mr Allan being imprisoned for 12 years and being put on the sex offenders register for life.Mr Allan told the BBC he was "overwhelmed" at the moment, adding: "It's a huge amount of confusion to go from being the villain to being innocent." He also told The Times he had suffered two years of "mental torture... I feel betrayed by the system which I had believed would do the right thing — the system I want to work in." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-42365521

The trial should have carried on resulting in a NG Verdicy
As it is it collapsed because the CPS couldn’t prove the allegations. It still leaves the lad a stigma and no NG
Very rare do they persue the alleged victim in these cases

Just reading about this after hearing a radio report earlier today. The police team bringing this prosecution must have no morals or scruples. 40,000 pieces of evidence withheld deliberately in order to get a prosecution while trying to destroy someone's life in the process.

Whether it’s incompetence or lack of Funding to properly police investigations matters not. This man was put through hell for two years and heads should roll. It’s not the only incident of recent times. Those poor kids who died in the arson attack in Manchester were from a family being harassed for months. They had begged the police and council to do something but nothing happened. In our village there is a prick who parks her car on the pavement causing an obstruction to anybody with a pushchair and causing unnecessary danger to young mums and their kids walking to school along the very busy A379. This woman has been reported to the police numerous times with photos. The police response is that it is not an offence to park on the pavement unless it is causing an obstruction. When pointed out that it was obstructing some pedestrians their classic answer is that it isn’t an obstruction unless the person being obstructed makes the complaint. WTF. Because of this the women recently had her car keyed, which nobody condones, but the police are now having to investigate criminal damage. I am not a police bashed, my daughter is a police officer, but they dunner help themselves.

Heard it on the radio, the defence team had to force this evidence to be handed over. These police officers, and possibly the cps staff involved and prosecution team should be investigated and struck off if found to have colluded in not using this evidence. Any public servants found to have knowingly been in not advising about this evidence should have any pension rights removed, lets make these people know it won't be tolerated.

Yeh but think of the bonuses for hitting their targets. Who cares if they destroy a few mens lives as a result? His accuser should get the 12 year sentence he was facing and the Police involved should get 5 years for with holding evidence then bared from ever holding a responsible job again. Make no mistake this will still change the lads life for good, how will he ever trust a woman again or rely on the police if he needs them?

The lad had to change his phone cause she kept texting him for sex. That in itself doesn't mean he didn't rape her, but it harms the prosecutions case & that's why the judge threw it out for non disclosure ⚖️

Because of this the women recently had her car keyed, which nobody condones, but the police are now having to investigate criminal damage. I am not a police bashed, my daughter is a police officer, but they dunner help themselves. Well if the car crime had been in London where I am, the police chief has said that car crime does not have to be investigated, together with not investigating theft or shoplifting under £90. where I live the low lifes know this and daily shoplift from the local shops it has become beyond a joke to an extent that I hate going into the shops now as I will see an attempt at shoplifting by someone, and no one does anything about it. I resent that I pay full price on a limited income and if I cant afford it I do without or save up. where these individuals think that it is there right just to take what they want when they want. I know we have had massive cuts to policing over the last 7 years in the met together with an increase terror threat but that's effecting a lot of people on a daily basis. here a manager was threatened with a knife, police response time they didn't Charity shop broken into police response time 3 days there are many other examples here of police doing nothing! we really are heading towards no law and disorder in London because of savage cuts by this government to policing increasing terror threats and increase in crime while reducing police stations and the number of officers. Myself and a mate usually go to London, for Christmas markets, winter wonderland etc but this year because we don't feel safe were not going in. Is this right ? no but its just the way we feel.

Don't you think that it should be anonymity for all in sex crimes until conviction? Yes, I've often thought this. In fact, for all crimes. Know why it doesn't happen? Because the police are basically too shit/underfunded/stretched call it what you like and rely heavily on the media (press mainly) to help them out and in return the media gets to fill its boots with salacious stories. Its very much a two way street. But it would be good to live in a world where details of a crime are only released on conviction. You'd see fear of crime fall to realistic levels almost overnight.
