Not far off Mr Leese. It would just rely on Chamberlain being good as an inverted winger! It's a shame really as he got to that byline better than most and crossed it for fun. I still remember seeing that twist and turn at the Boothen, against Luton wasn't it, in that 4-4 thriller which I'm pleased to say I attended? 50plus seconds Was the reserve goalie from the U/12s ??!!

I think it's impossible to nail a definitive XI not least because our thirties side is beyond living memory.
Banks,Franklin, Matthews & Hudson are without peer. The rest we can argue about.

The goalie from the start of the second half was Derek Parkin ( left back ex Wolves). Useless fact, our goalkeeper scored in this game. (Paul Bracewell who went in goal when Foxy was dismissed, reverted to midfield at star of the second half and then scored our 3rd. Happy days! The U12 goalie is Bracewell.

Shilts wasn’t anywhere near as bad as has sometimes been aledged. He was in fact very good but for the most part playing in a declining team that was often under a lot of pressure (see J.Butland). He was however quite dismal with penalties! You are spot on Wuzza, Shilton had some great games for Stoke. I believe his only penalty save for us was against Ray Graydon of Villa in a 1 -0 win at the Vic.

Come on, that's daft. Its impossible to comment on Steele as no one has ever seen him play but his goalscoring record stands on his own. I get the impression that Ritchie got quite a bit of stick as well as praise. Was Greenhoff a striker or more a number 10?

Spoken to enough old Stokes when I was a kid to understand how good Steele was. World War two fucked us over

Banks
Marsh Franklin ( never saw ) Smith. Pejic
Mahoney Hudson
Mathews ( only saw @ 50 when he was well finished ) Greenoff Burrows
Steele ( never saw )
Interesting 7 from the Seventies side.
If i was given the chance to have 2 of those players for the rest of the season, then the likes of Mathews / Franklin and Steele would or should be the standout pick, but to be honest the difference Marsh/ Pejic and Greenoff would make the current side would be unbelievable.
Butland
Marsh Zouma Shawcross. Pejic
Affelay Allen
Shaqiri Greenoff Choppo Motting
Crouch

Only Banks, Franklin, Hudson and Greenhoff would be automatic for me. Perm any seven from about thirty others to make up the rest.

I recall Tommy Docherty-who played against him-say though Stan was a great player, you wouldn't want him in your side when things got rough. He'd be in the squad.

A little while ago I had a bit too much spare time and made a greatest XI (well, squad of 22) on FIFA. It was a daft project, but went something like:
GK: Banks RB: Marsh CB: Franklin CB: Shawcross LB: McCue CM: Hudson CM: Sellars (Harry) RW: Matthews LW: Ormston CF: Ritchie CF: Steele
I can't remember the rest of the squad, but it included players like Herod, Burrows, Greenhoff, Bloor and Clamp.

Lots of older stokies reckoned matthews was overrated. Of the current players i would deffo have crouch in the squad, shaqiri is potentially good enough and butland would contend if he stays with us to full maturity. Garth crooks was also a fine player as was lee chapman, not cultured but scored a lot of goals at a high level

He was the world's best player in the 30's. He's first name on the team sheet. Re Chapman, he scored goals but was unpopular. Unfairly? Not sure

Can't believe how many of these 'All Time Teams' have omitted Jimmy Greenhoff.
And big John Ritchie.
How we could do with those now

Not sure "Big daft Chapman" we used to sing. Always seemed a bit indifferent & semi-detached. Never a favourite with the fans. Goal poacher. Could do with one of them now

Ive come across numerous posts over the years saying that Shilton wasnt all that much for us, Ive always been a bit puzzled by it tbh as he made some fabulous saves and gave some fantastic performances for us. I definitely remember thinking at some point that he might be better than Banksy. I think there was a bit of resentment towards him because the fans wanted John Farmer who was a very fine keeper. I think there was something going on in the background with Farmer that led to Waddo looking for another goalie who he could rely on. It was a massive signing for us and in those first games he looked unbeatable in goal. I cant ever remember him being poor in goal for us.

Slight correction in that I am old enough to have seen Steele, and Franklin play! Started in 1947 so got 2-3 years watching them. Can I make plea for Alec Ormston to be included as a left-winger. Relied on his goals many times. 'Greatest'? how measured - in terms of individual ability? long-term consistency? effective contribution to team? pleasing to watch? - think I'll leave that to others!!
