Still getting over the fact that Bony knows where the goal is (but sadly, aware Ryan made it easier for him )... so 3 really important points, a win, a confidence boost and maybe the start of some momentum... but they were abject to be fair and look doomed even by December. We managed to hold on though after our goals, shakily sometimes but we haven't been able to do it in recent weeks so a plus to Sparky for that. Does today make me more convinced about LMH after the thrre previous games especially? Honestly no, but he got the main decisions right for me and maybe earns a couple more chances to prove us wrong. Really hope for encouraging news about BMI, thinking of you matey. xx 6* * if you were there please

7.5
First half an hour was as bad as it gets and Zouma was left horribly exposed by the fact that we effectively weren’t playing a right winger.
Two excellent goals settled us down and everything he/we did was sensible - Diouf moving wide, the subs were positive and well-timed.
Still needed Jack to bail us out a couple of times against a dreadful side, but the last hour or so was still the best we’ve played at home since probably the Man Utd game.

Still persists with this crap formation. Was amazed he made all his substitutions today although one was forced. Sitting back for the last 20 minutes was fucking agony to watch. However it's 3 points on the board so we should be a little grateful.

5 for an ugly win. Thank God he’s given up on three at the back. As everyone has been saying for weeks, Diouf and Crouch up front gives us the best chance of scoring. His subs were correct; however, he forget to tell them where to play - it was a complete shambles after Affelay and Ramadan came on. I have idea what he was trying to do and neither did the players.

5, we don't have the players for 4-4-2 and its a waste to have Shaq out wide, plus points for changing it but the lack of width didn't help us much.

10 out of 10 for signing Shaq Allen and diouf
0 out of 10 for signing imbulla berahino and wimmer
Who would have thought when the going gets tough the tough getting going
And the other lot disappear

We don't have the players for 3 at the back or for 442. Hughes is slowly realising that he has to go back to 4231, evident today when he (correctly) switched Diouf to the right and played Shaqiri as a number 10. It's like he's had to go through a couple of long and disastrous experiments (that have nearly cost him his job) before eventually realising he was right with 4231 in the first place all along.

Blimey I thought it was a back 3 with 2 wing backs at the start. Diouf and Crouch up front, Zouma right back. He switched Shaq and Diouf second half once it became clear Shaq was just going to wander wherever he felt like.

Unusually for Hughes I thought his substitutions were absolutely spot on. Ramadan and Affelay both made a positive impact replacing players who looked tired.
However I think maybe back to back starts for Crouch is a stretch at this stage, and today answered no questions about what our best formation is.
Our five minute flurry before half time undoubtedly saved him from what would have been one of the toughest team talks of his tenure so far.
I’ll say 7.

However it's 3 points on the board so we should be a little grateful. You were watching a different game to me if you think Hughes persisted with his 343 formation. We started with 442 - with Zouma clearly playing at right back. The start by Swansea showed that Zouma was not going to be able to cope without assistance from Shaq when it came to defending so we switched to a hybrid of 4231 4321 and 433. Shaq was given licence to play in the middle and Diouf and to some extent Allen, protected Zouma. In the second half especially. Allen made a number of important tackles on our right which leads me to conclude that we were at times playing with a 3 man midfield in a 433. I'll give Sparky a 7.5 for trying a different starting formation and for tweeking it when it wasn't working. I'll also give him credit for making the right subs at the right time. We and he are a long way from sorting all our problems out - but hopefully today may be the start of Sparky being a bit more imaginative with tactics and formations.

5* Made hard work out of beating a poor team -1 for Crouch -1 for Choupo whatever he was supposed to be doing -1 for Fletcher again -1 for Pieters again even though it turned out he played quite well -1 for no youth on the bench.

6 - we just about pulled through after an awful start and a nervy end, thankfully Swansea were even worse than us whereas many teams would have broke us down, but it's 3 important points when wins have been thin on the ground. Hopefully, we can build confidence and belief with a 4-4-2 and grind out the results we need, particularly in the next 2 home games.

8*
-1 for starting 442. -1 for keeping crouch on so long when he was knackered.
Plus points for changing to the diamond when it was obvious we had no creativity in midfield. Plus points for afellay substitution to keep the ball when we needed to.

7* from me. Bony's goal was a great strike. He got in front of his defender (Shawcross) and did what strikers do. We fought back with 2 quick goals and his subs were right. Not sure what else he could do other than grind out 3 precious points. The actions of many of the players at the end showed how they felt. That win was as much needed for them as it was for us supporters who wanted Stoke to win.
OS.
