N’Zonzi. And 2x wing backs. We would be a completely different proposition. Listening to Phil Thompson on soccer Saturday saying Seville got better when they took nzonzi off at half time against Liverpool as he was slowing them up and taking them sideways and backwards. That may be the case, but he’d fucking walk into our side and instantly improve us beyond measure.

N’Zonzi. And 2x wing backs. We would be a completely different proposition. Correct. We play a formation which requires wing backs but we don’t have one. And we have never replaced one of the best midfielders in Europe

Pretty sure that’s how a fair proportion of this board feel about you, mate. I'm not a proffesional footballer though. Correct. But that doesn’t mean my initial assessment was incorrect

Glenn Whelan played in five games last season in which we conceded four goals.

I simply don't get it. Fletcher looked a step up from Whelan in his first few games. Now he looks terrible - slow, poor passing and gets caught in possession

Fletcher may be having a dip in form last couple of games, but he’s still better than Glenda, imo...he reads the game better, is better at cutting opposition crosses out, He is calm under pressure and can pass the ball forward...something Glenda seemed unable to do...I know Glenda like jonboy were ‘triiffic and loyal servants of the club etc..but they needed Moving on ..as does Charlie Farlie....especially after tweeting stuff like that..IMO

We're not missing Whelan on the pitch. Maybe off it. What we are missing is an NZonzi type. Someone physically strong but can pass a ball as well as mix it. Glen was a great servant but we'd be no better with him. We are missing Terry Conroy, Alan Hudson, Peter Dobing, Mike Pejic, Gordan Banks Jackie Marsh, John Ritchie, Alan Bloor Mike Mahoney, and George Eastham types as well. Is N’zonzi the only type of player we’re missing? Get over it. He was only good for one season anyway. Most of the time he couldn’t be bothered and he asked for a transfer every chance he got.

I think Whelan is a red herring ...we are missing a striker
You can bet money on us being beaten by Spurs ( Kane ) Liverpool ( Salah ) etc
And if we draw derby ( vydra) or Sheffield utd ( Clarke) in the cup , I think we are getting knocked out by a championship team again
I think Fletcher is fine
I think we are missing a striker

No we aren't.
The real debate is whether we could have got better than Darren Fletcher (which is yes), not whether we were right to replace Whelan.

Darren hasn't been the hoped for Glen upgrade. Glen I think actually read the game better, getting around the field (ok not as quickly as we'd like) and generally being in the right place at the right time. He tackled more effectively and with more commitment. Darren's passing is much better, but lately he needs far more time than he has to deliver. The more prosaic GC is a better option if/when fit.

Yes we do miss Whelan. He always gave 100% for us and we could do with the rest of the team having the same comittment and desire to win

Was chatting to someone from Villa's hieracy last night & they said Whelan had by far his best game for them yesterday. Said he's a great player but was a slow burner & its taken him a while to adjust & get going.
Was a great servant to the Potters but do think he left at the right time & is probably at his level right now for age & stage of his career.

We were wank last season and conceded a fuck ton of goals with him in the team every week and we’re wank this season and have conceded a fuck ton of goals without him in the team every week.
So no, we don’t miss him, his replacement from West Brom does just as good a job giving the ball away constantly, whilst bollocking everyone else for being wank.

Whelan was absolutely terrible. Couldnt pick a 2 yard pass, is slower than the titanic, can't shoot, can't put a tackle in. A passenger who fucking stole a living

We have one midfielder who's good enough for the bench. The rest aren't.
Same as last season.
Our midfield is an absolute shit show, the worst in the league easily.

I'm sure that he would provide some quick and speedy action in our midfield. Release some of our front line attackers to go in there and devastate the opposition. Yeah! Go for it! How can it fail?

No. Glenn was a great servant for the club but he was clearly shot at this level last season. He's still capable of doing a job in the Championship but he'd be a liability in the starting line up for us. Good move for all concerned.
