Philip Hammond has claimed “there are no unemployed people” in the UK as the chancellor prepares to fight for his political life in this week’s budget.
I'm just wondering what all those guys on my street are doing who seem to role out of bed at noon everyday and spend most of the day smoking skunk....maybe online entrepreneurs? and I suppose the drug dealers in my town now classed as self-employed?

Just been watching politics on the Beeb, and apparently his comments were taken out of context.

"where are all these unemployed people, there are no unemployed people" sounds conclusive to me. I hardly know anybody who has got a proper job. and if there is no unemployment whats with all the paranoia about Eastern Europeans taking people's job?

I watched it earlier and he seemed at first to be saying that technology wouldn't necessarily mean jobs going, but then moved on to saying what you quoted. The amount of MP's suffering Foot in Mouth Disease is incredible.

Full on chemical Ali moment. Marr gave him a chance to at least qualify his utterance & he missed that. It was like he hadn't realised what he had said.
