Had an email, supposedly from Paypal, today saying I had paid £39.99 to Microsoft for an X Box. I haven't paid anything at all, so I am assuming it is a scam to get my details? It gave me a link where I could cancel the payment, but this came up "deceptive site ahead". I wasn't going to cancel but I just wanted to see if it was bogus.
Anyone had similar emails, and what's the best thing to do apart from ignoring them? Any help gratefully received.

Most definitely a scam
People go to great lengths to make very convincing fake websites that look uncannily like the real one. Always check the address bar, it would be paypal.com, with https more than likely. The fake would be something extra added in, like paypalpayments.com or something of that ilk

Why on Earth would you click a link in an email, even if you're just being curious? It's on the first page right near the top in the book of 'things to never do on the internet'.
If you thought it was from Paypal, go into your bookmarks & click your own, trusted link to Paypal, then login & see what is/isn't there.

I broke out in a cold sweat earlier. I hate parting with cash at the best of times, never mind some twat robbing me!

Loads of authentic looking emails from scammers pretending to be Paypal, eBay, HMRC, etc.. And increasingly, Mailer-Daemon notices telling me that my attempt to send an email to Tanya in Estonia (et al, ad infinitum) was unsuccessful, and I need to click on the link to 'view' the email I tried to send. Obviously, you just say fuck off and delete.
But I have had a real email from a legal firm in Lagos, informing me that I am the lucky recipient of a dead African prince's legacy, and they just need my bank account details to send all the money to. Wow! I'm gonna be rich.

Fraud has reached epidemic proportions. You can't trust anyone any more. Our credit card has been hacked twice in the last 15 months. The fraudulent charges were refunded of course and new cards issued on both occasions. You would think it would be the fraudsters trying to keep up with bank security but no, the banks are continually playing catch-up with the increasing sophistication of the crims.
Sorry, I know this was originally about emails...
