Whenever I read the quote from Pele about Sir Stan being "The man who showed us how football should be played...." it makes my heart burst with pride. England's greatest ever keeper and outfield player both plied their trade on the hallowed turf of the Victoria ground.Magical.

Plus a notable mention for Eric Skeels, who didn't make the final. Anyone here know why, was he injured, or just not playing well...

Great Thread Misty! Stop being Grouchy SArge! I'll tell you why I love the club Moving to Canada as such a young lad it was hard for me to relate to my Father's love of Stoke City and especially considering the only way I could keep tabs as a boy was through the back end of a Sunday Toronto newspaper that literally just had the tables.... My folks got divorced after we moved here, which complicated stuff. I went to the VIc when I was 7, (I'm 41 years old now) Had family in Alsager and NewChapel and I went with my Uncle John and I was frightened to DEATH! Crazy swearing and getting bumped and pushed I was in tears, couldn't even understand it, we left at half time I think, I couldn't handle the aggression to be honest, was too much for me I guess ( I was only 7 ) I spent that following Summer in England and probably drove every PE teacher nuts come September because I taught everyone how to play baseball with Cricket bats Getting older I always kept tabs and always had new (OLD) kit from my Dad when we would get visitors or parcels from family coming over during the 90s. Promotion meant everything for me being so far away, I think many overseas fans can relate to that fact. People often talk of the wilderness years, imagine living in CAnada trying to connect.. Am I a JCL ? Who knows, I go to the matches I can, was at WEmbley for the 5-0, that was something very special for me I think I love Stoke because of my Father I guess, his name is Chester. CTID

Because my Granddad was on the books back in the 30s, he gave up footy to take a job at a local refractory which paid more than four times what he was getting (sounds daft these days) And I grew up in the shadow of the Victoria Ground, literally.

I'm a born and bred stokie, my dad's a stokie and wherever I maybe in the world I'm a stokie and always will be.
I also loved the fact we were hated and teams despised playing us because we were so hard to beat while under TP. I found it funny hearing other fans, press and pundits slate us saying we play football the wrong way, which of course was crap as we didn't pick the ball up, we played it within the rules. Why make 10/15 needless passes when 1 or 2 would do to get the same outcome.

Because we are a proper football club that retains its links with the community and our heritage. Plus we don't reinvent ourselves as a global corporate brand and price working class people out being able to watch.

The first match I can remember was at the old vic ground Way back in 1953 my old teacher Mr. HEEKS was then on the board Got in a few times free, Saw TOMMY LAWTON BEDFORD JEZZARD back then The CHARLES brothers.Loads of other famous players, Was a regular supporter until we moved to Torquay in 1980. Brought my son up to be a stokie [ on this site as `silkiestokie `So keeping the support going into the next generation SO proud to be a stokie till my dying day

After things like 0-4 at home to Bristol Rovers under Brian Little it's a question I have regularly asked myself :-)
But in reality it's because since my first ever game in 1973 I have been simply "hooked", and I am eternally grateful that we have, mainly, tried to stay what we are, a mid-sized club who sign the best they can, try to keep prices realistic ( in context !) and don't have a team chock-full of "£30 mill each" players
Oh, and because I don't see Stoke shirts everywhere I go, only in my wardrobe and when my sons visit

Being proud to be a Stoke fan in my opinion means: 1. Wearing your red and white striped shirt on holiday. 2. Sticking up for Stoke when others are being negative towards them. 3. Supporting the team through thick and thin. 4. Never booing at matches. 5. Not singling out individual players for criticism.
BUT.......... there is nothing wrong with not being proud for a few hrs after 4.50pm on a Saturday afternoon after another dreadful stoke performance, as long as you regain your pride by Monday morning before you meet the first glory hunter of the day in the messroom !
