He had something to prove against his old team. So did Crouch. I thought they played very well - about as well as they are can However, teams like Liverpool, Man City are different gravy and can step it up a beer when they need to and crush teams like us. The separation between the top 6 and the rest is getting wider and wider, and I see no end in sight. How many beers can they step up

Yes that's also a positive, there's more go in him than the rest combined at times but I just feel at times it is very much effort with little return for the energy he expends and that's because he's got no one to match him on the pitch for drive and endeavour

Much, much improved the last few games. Still can't finish well, but he did the midfield role very well.

He should have buried that second chance he had. Really poor. And his passing was also crap.
But he probably was our best player which doesn't bode well.

Probably controversial but is Allen a part of the cause our defensive frailty?
yes he runs around a lot which is great, but the best CM's i've seen in a Stoke shirt or in football in general are those who make it look effortless and dictate the play from the centre of the pitch which also offers adequate cover to the defence. I feel this isnt helped by Fletcher being fucked after 60 minutes and being sloppy in possession.

Yes very much shame he is carrying Fletcher on his back but easily the best yesterday

Simply he is running central midfield on his own and it can't carry on.
Assuming Cameron is out until about 2022 I'd like to see Zouma alongside him , even with the trade off of Johnson at right back if need be.

Yep we're at that point now where Zouma needs to replace Fletcher. The manager has finally realised that he needs to bin three at the back but it'll be a while longer before he realises this one.

I think you're right. Even if he decides Fletcher needs a break you can see Adam or Affelay coming in. Or more likely he will carry on flogging Fletcher to death. We are at the beginning of a really busy period now with games coming thick and fast and he simply won't cope. It's Tone and Walters all over again .

Honestly baffled at how people's views of nogger can vary so drastically, I thought Allen was toss yesterday. Didn't pass well, didn't win the ball, didn't carry it forward, fucked up a sitter, and didn't even engage in any meaningful harrassment, just ran slowly up and down the pitch with an angry look on his face.

I like Joe Allen
What a player we would have though if we could send him in for an operation to swap his feet over

I like him, though I think he would be at his best with two other more positionally static defensive midfielders holding ground.
Or at least a very fit, quick and positionally aware DM

He's been very good these last 3/4 games. Him and Diouf did what we needed, they got amongst them and they didn't like it. Great ball for the first goal too.
He's got to play well though as every other midfielder we have he has to carry.

How anyone can be so negative about a quality player like Allen is totally beyond me. He has been outstanding since he arrived. He regularly breaks up opposition play and puts us back in possession. Yesterday he made a superb pass to enable Shaqiri to equalise and his work rate is phenomenal. You need to book an appointment at Specsavers!

To be fair, although he did say his passing was crap, he also said he was our best player. So in relative terms at least, he played well according to bayern.

Allen was fantastic yesterday. He carried our midfield. The quicker Fletcher is dropped the better.

He was very good - one of our (many) priorities is to get a younger version of Fletcher/Whelan to help him out.

I’d like the idea of Zouma & Allen if we can get a settled solid back 4

And surprise surprise both Allen and Fletcher looking better now they aren't having to fit in intensive internationals. Maybe if there was ANYONE else available in our unbalanced squad who was good enough to play when they were showing signs of fatigue it might have helped them? Also remember that often our central 2 are having to compete with 3 opposition midfielders. Ultimately proper pros like Fletcher or Allen know when they have had a good, bad or indifferent game but what you can say is that neither of them ever hide or stop trying.
