Great day out, over from Canada so planned just the Bournmouth game after that thought what the heck and went Watford today. Only come over every couple of years really enjoyed it but still a lot of work to do to stay away from the bottom places.

Pulis-like??? Really? We defended a 1-0 lead rather than a 1-0 defeat.

A very Pulis like performance to be honest, lacking on quality but full of spirit and fight back to the future type of offering orchestrated by Ryan Shawcross Prehistoric Tone would have loved it.

You didn't even watch the game. We did play well, out played them as a team with passion. Good passing precise and fast movement up field where we should have scored two more. One byBera who had his shot saved by Gomes outstretched studs and one by Adam who hit the post. Ref had a nightmare should have sent Deeney off. Watford did not have a shot on goal and Jack only had two crosses to clear. Berahino should have buried that chance, sorry he needs to be shipped out on loan asap to the lower leagues to stop him been picked in any future squad this season. Our passing was pretty much shit but our defending was much better lead by Ryan who was immense.

At last ive found the moaners thread.well done lads 3pts...... I think you will find it's constructive criticism, we won we needed to but it was far from convincing despite 4 seasons of rebuilding we have gone back to Pulis ball under Hughes effective but horrible to watch.

I've been heavily critical of us especially these last few weeks however today we remembered that we do have a set of balls in the squad!
Might not have been pretty but today was exactly the sort of performance we needed.
Managers love a 1-0 especially away from home and we also rectified the huge gaping gaps we had between the lines from the last away game.
The squad is short and the big questions will still be hanging over Hughes throughout the season but the summer is looking more and more likely as to when or if a decision will be made so we need to ensure we get through to that point still as a top flight club.
At home it is slightly different but away from home that is pretty much the blueprint moving forwards. We still desperately need to work on taking time out of the game towards the end as our trainer didn't come on no where near enough but we have plenty of time to practise that for when we go 1-0 uo at the Vitality later in the season.
Overall though, well done Mark and enjoy the win tonight potters!

I think when people reply on threads like this one they should state win a disclaimer what their priorities are.
If you love football first and Stoke second that was a poor performance.
If your priorities are the other way round then we largely nullified one of the league's in-form teams on their own patch and scored a well worked goal, before creating two clear cut chances on the counter that should have seen us double our lead. By no means a classic but certainly not a bad display and sufficiently high on spirit and commitment to suggest that fears of relegation and calling for the manager's head are massively premature.

Parked the bus, hoofed it long, not pretty at all. Still we got 3 pts but it has papered over a lot of cracks. If every away game was like today, would you take it? Thought so!!

Make no mistake yesterday was Pulisesque alright ..but under the circumstances it was a much needed win..and apart from the goal the 3 other best chances were ours!
We defended brilliantly but I don't think we'd get away with conceding so much possession and territory every week.
But every player gave their all which I all you can ask really.

From what I saw on a stream it wasn't pretty. But after the recent poor results we have had we desperately needed 3 points today. To get them in an away match against a side who started the day in the top 6 is better than I expected. If I am honest (and remember I am an optimist) I hoped for a draw at best but my heart said we would probably lose today- largely because of our porous defence. So a win and a clean sheet is exactly what the team and the manager needed after last week and I am delighted. There were a lot of players on the pitch who can hold their heads high after today and the result should do wonders for their confidence and hopefully kick start some better form - and, hopefully a few more comfortable wins in the second quarter of the season. As an example of how tight this league is this season - had we been awarded and scored 2 of the penalties we should have had lest week, we would be 9th now. I'm not saying we deserved to win last week - just pointing out that something as simple as a more competent ref over 90 minutes could have seen us basking in the top half of the league tonight. That's a bit of a stretch John unless you apply the same criteria to all our matches. It could be argued that Arsenal should have had two penalties and we might not have ended up with anything from that game.

It could be argued that Arsenal should have had two penalties and we might not have ended up with anything from that game. Agreed - but the point I am making is not that we should be higher (or lower) than we are - simply that the middle third (or 50% if you like) is very tight and a few ifs and buts either way can make a big difference to league position. Take away the top 6 or so and any team that gets detached at the bottom, and the remainder of the positions are decided by quite tight margins. For example, ow many more points would we have needed lest season to continue our bizarre run of 9th place finishes - 3 or 4? In such a tight league then an unexpectedly good result (whatever the quality of the game) is often the important thing to restore confidence and sometimes leads to a run of excellent form compared to what went before. Remember Leicester the season before they won the league? In around February they looked stone cold certs for relegation then they won a game and another and another. They not only escaped the drop but got enough momentum to win the league the following season - it really is a league of fine margins at times.

l can't believe any of our fans would be critical of a boring 1-0 away win against a very good Watford team. That's the type of grind out win which keeps a struggling side out of the bottom three. We made more chances than Chelsea earlier this season but still lost 4 nil.
To answer the OP, Ryan, Zouma and Kev all excellent at the back, Jack didn't have a shot on target to deal with all afternoon, Saido, in spite of missing his chance to score, had a lovely control of a long ball played out from defence and then played in Charlie for a run on goal with a perfectly weighted diagonal pass. I was never convinced with Bony last season but l think we should persevere with Saido.
