Sorry Joe but it would be a great story if Syria qualified. Triumph over adversity and all that...... Not that bothered. I'd like Australia make it but if they don't I shrug like the Alan Partridge meme! Apparently though Syria players are all vetted by Assad to make sure they support his regime.

Doesn't Assad have an English wife? Maybe Samba is related to her - if so he is just supporting the family!

How much does Oz as a nation get into the old soccer when they're in the WC Joe?

Did anyone see the penalty that was awarded to Syria late on? Probably the worst decision I have seen in a loooong time.

The obvious test is would that have been given outside of the box? A clear no way.. joke decision. Not sure if the same ref has both legs or if it's somebody different

How much does Oz as a nation get into the old soccer when they're in the WC Joe? When they got through the group in 2006 it was the biggest thing I've ever seen here. The final group game was against Croatia (the three yellow cards Graham Poll game) and when the normal breakfast TV shows started they suggested turning over channels to SBS because history was about to be made. The most poignant thing about 2006 was the nature of the exit. A last minute penno from Italy. It demonstrated the ruthlessness of football and how they were operating on a stage up and beyond anything they had ever done before. In 2006 they played Brazil on a Sunday and the global audience will surely have been over a billion. The biggest stage on earth and never before had Australia, in any form, been the focus of the planet. In the two since 2006 they have become a little bit arrogant about it. This struggle to qualify might give them the wake up call they need.
