Not really footie related as such, but I've just spotted this and thought I'd share it. Billionaires or not, this is a fantastic gesture from our owners... The owner of Stoke-on-Trent firm Bet365, Denise Coates, has donated the whole amount needed for a brand new building - shown on the left in this artists impression - on the side of the Donna Louise hospice. It'll be for young people, with life-limiting conditions, who have outgrown the children's service. Work to build it is expected to begin in November. bbc.in/2xfn2uV

Well done the Coates family. Makes you proud to be part of this great club. Not that I've ever been anything else, but this gesture is typical of the warm-heartedness of many Stokies and the entrepreneurs who have made their living here over the centuries. Each morning I take my dog for a walk at Queen's Park in Longton and it only exists because of people like the Coates family from the past.
OS.

I have a personal interest.

Not living in the city myself and looking in from the outside I always get the feeling that S-o-T has to look after itself as it gets little help from national sources unlike many other more publicised regions in the north so it really is good to know that such a rich and powerful family is prepared to help take care of 'their own'.

Regardless of how much money it cost, how much the Coates family have or where it come from, they don’t have to do it. So it is a grand gesture.

It's a great gesture from the family. Nice to see billionaires using their money to help others by setting up charities and donating to good causes.
Doubt you'll ever see this family driving round in bugatti Veyrons on the way to their superyachts.

Think the family show the true heart and friendliness that people in the area have always shown to one another. that when the chips are down people look after each other as I've said on other threads this is a family club who looks after the players well and also the community this in turn will lead to better players coming and a brilliant team atmosphere and players giving there all for the club.

It's a great gesture... but will it impact on new signings? Even more importantly, how does it affect our net spend? If our net spend isn't £billions then the gravity crocodile will be licking his lips come the end of September! Edit: This might be bollox - do crocodiles even have lips?

Edit: This might be bollox - do crocodiles even have lips? No this is why they can't swallow food under water. Although this rare wildlife shot seems to contradict that so who knows.

Would that be the first Duke of Sutherland who was hated by the Highlanders of Sutherland and Caithness ( where I live ) for his role in the Highland Clearances ? There have been attempts to blow up his 100 feet high statue on Ben Bhraggie above the small coastal village of Golspie. Where should a statue of Peter Coates be located to mark his outstanding contribution to the lives of the people of Stoke on Trent over many years.

The football club and the city of Stoke on Trent are extremely fortunate to have the Coates family here.
It's not just about football, they are big local employers, plus things like this going on. I'm sure this particular gesture is just the big one that makes the headlines, I suspect they support a lot of stuff in the city without anyone really knowing.
Also, the benefits of a healthy, successful football club in the area (which ours undoubtedly is these days) has lots of benefits, both economically and in terms of mental well being of the community, believe it or not.
Anyone in doubt should spend some time researching what happens at some clubs. Palarse seems to be the most recent example, Villa is another, there are many more. We are fortunate indeed and whilst we may at times grumble about Hughes, it's a valid point to say we have arguably the best owners and best manager (and also the best combination of same) in the league. So there.

Well done, Denise and the rest of the family, What it will mean to the children can't be measured in monetary terms. Excellent stuff. That's the thing though mate these are not children anymore they're young adults. Treetops offered fantastic care and facilities for kids up to 18 yrs but after that, that was it. They were out on their own. No longer seeing all the mates they'd grown up with with similar life shortening illnesses and diseases and no longer able to use the facilities and care which had helped to make their lives more tolerable. This fantastic gesture by Denise will mean that care either residential or day by day can now be extended until they're mid 20's by which time, very sadly, a lot of them will be no longer with us. It can't be praised too highly and I am very proud that she is someone associated with my club and my city.
