If it was a defender doing it, they would have asked why did you go with your foot and not your head.

Going into this our local boozer's 11 goal burster looked like going today if Dippers scored 2...As it happens Man City came closer, had they notched in a 6th they'd have won....

Point being his head was where his head should be, and his foot wasn't. Er, watch it again fella. He gets the ball and then the keepers face. Keeper lost the race to the ball. The keeper headed the ball Mane kicked the keepers head. Mane lost the race.

I look at the challenge as being reckless. He clearly glances and sees the keeper coming out of the area. Whilst his "attempt" to win the ball isn't as bad as a full blooded, premeditated professional foul its still completely stupid given the odds of "being able to nick the ball out of the air in front of the incoming keeper", and could easily have resulted in a severe injury. Put (any set of) different players into the same scenario and doing the same thing and 9 times of out 10 the ref will send the player off. This isn't "interpretation of the rules" its simple maths based on the "average occurrence and result" of raising your foot above your chest height on a football pitch in very close proximity to another player - indeed the goalies get even more protection from "high feet" increasing the likelyhood of a foul/card being given.

This is the rule on serious foul play: "A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play. A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.Advantage should not be applied in situations involving serious foul play unless there is a clear subsequent opportunity to score a goal. The referee must send off the player guilty of serious foul play when the ball is next out of play. A player who is guilty of serious foul play should be sent off and play is restarted with a direct free kick from the position where the offence occurred (see Law 13 – Position of free kick) or a penalty kick (if the offence occurred inside the offender’s penalty area)." www.fifa.com/mm/Document/FootballDevelopment/Refereeing/02/36/01/11/LawsofthegamewebEN_Neutral.pdfI haven't seen the incident, but looking at the pics I think the ref correctly applies the laws of the game. You might disagree with the rules, but the ref did the only thing he could. For those who have seen it, how similar is the incident to Welbeck's goal against Malta? Nothing happened, but Welbeck's foot was high as the keeper came for it.

Keeper wins it at head height it's a red card all day if lukaku did that to jack today we'd be on the pitch . I don't believe any malice but it was out of control and dangerous

Would he have sent him off if it was an outfield player that he caught? That's what the high foot rule is for.

Mane is a great player, and a pacy winger. And one afternoon, he goes off crazier than usual. The entire backline goes to the halfway line to defend. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he jumps in the air, studs up while he does it. He flies at me, and he says, "Why so serious?" He kicks me in the face with his boots. "Why so serious?!" He sticks the studs in my eye - "Let's put a smile on that face!" And... Why so serious?
