Nothing new there, Lilles stadium has a dividing retractable pitch, and they used the stadium for Davis cup tennis, Basketball and concerts without wrecking the pitch. It even has a roof

I prefer football pitches when they make me think they're just grass planted in the earth, with worms and stones merely a foot beneath the surface. All these fancy part grass part plastic heatable retractable 'playing surfaces' are nonsense and typical of the world we live in. I BLAME KITSON!

It should be compulsory that for four months of the season, the centre of the pitch and both goalmouths should be a foot deep in foul smelling, sticky mud.

I'm not sure about "foul smelling" just enough mud to ensure that all the footballers playing ending the ninety* minutes with mud on their shorts and shirts. Too many complete a game nowadays and a 30 minute 30 degree spin wash would get the sweat out and they'd be good to go after twenty minutes on the airer.
A spotless kit is a kit that has not been worn.
The game has gone soft.

Who can forget Regis' goal bound ball getting stuck in the mud that fateful day at Vale Park? Nice ball from Stein, goalie flapping about outside his own 18y box and nowt but a foot of mud between an open goal and an equaliser.

Cheers mate, it's taken me years to forget Neil Aspin and the big grin on his face as he cleared it off the line in front of us Stokies now you've reminded me.

The quality of Hudson shines through doesn't it There was something about playing onan absolute biog that always seemed to get the crowd going ( and the Baseball Ground was definitely the biggest bog of all )

it seems like a lesson in over engineering, i was expecting the 3 sections to travel under 3 different stands because of space restrictions outside, the question for me is why does it need to be split if its all going out together ? ?

Are the sections stacked on top of one another to save space? it doesnt mention anything about stacking them, but given the fact that they move apart before sliding it would seem that they take up more space which seems a little bonkers to me, unless its about reducing the cost of the motors which move the trays

No stand is 75 yards wide but many stands are 25 yards wide.

No stand is 75 yards wide but many stands are 25 yards wide. no idea but the video shows the 3 sections are the full length of the pitch and they head out under a stand behind the goal, if they wanted to stack it would seem that would be the least likely shape of the trays my assumption is that it slides out like the one at the Gelre dome which is why i don't understand the need to separate the pitch into 3 sections the dutch pitch has been working fine for almost 20 years

Yes, footy pitches went downhill the day Derby left the baseball ground. Great day out. I was there!! Nuff said really. One of my proudest days as a Stoke fan. After that we were definitely going to win the league, no question!! Unfortunately I wasn't banking on multiple leg breaks stuffing us up ☹️☹️☹️

These artificial pitches - for that is what they are have devalued the game.
Football was invented in the British wintertime. Successful teams have to master all of the weather conditions that a British winter can muster.
I would ban all artificial fibres woven into the pitch. I would ban any AstroTurf edges around the pitch. I would introduce a rule that under soil heating only be used to soften a badly frozen pitch. Where possible snow should remain.
These are the conditions football was designed for.

All that to allow for an American Football pitch? Seems pointless to me, but then I don't see the point of American Football.

Leagues in warmer climes should be forced to water their pitches to make a quagmire and have snow machines at the side of the pitch for 6 games every season. They should all have to sport handlebar moustaches and heavy woollen shirts. Balls should be caseys, boots hobnail and subs outlawed. Only then will they have truly mastered association football.
