Never saw him play, but I'm bored to death of hearing his name and how good he supposedly was, I've never heard anyone who wasn't a Stoke fan even mention his name. Yet you've commented on a post about him. Strange that.... Seeing Hudson play was a privilege sorry you that you didn't see him play but to put it into perspective Ronaldo isnt fit to clean his boots. £10 To meet him and to talk to him is a absolute bargain

Along with Banks easily the best player I've seen playing for Stoke, hard for people , who weren't around at the time, to visualise what an effect he had on an already good side. Not a hero , for me, like Denis, but ability wise , in a class of his own.

I never saw Matthews or Franklin play but loved hearing old men (and women) wax lyrical about them. Ok you don't,I find that weird but that's up to you. However your use of the word supposedly is utterly stupid.

Football messageboards need posts like yours to get the juices flowing. And this is an absolute belter. Even for all of Benji's insane ramblings I've rarely seen one post completely take over a thread like this one has. There's an art to concocting something so desperately ignorant and stupid that it demands so much attention, and for this, I salute you. For what it's worth, in my opinion Huddy was the greatest player (in my time) to ever pull on a Stoke shirt. In my late dad's opinion only Sir Stan was better. Our opinions count for jack shit, but if you add them to everyone else's it starts to paint a picture that only a complete cockwomble would ignore.

He did glide. Whatever the weather. He was a joy to behold. Never better illustrated than when we played Derby at the Baseball ground in the 74/75 season(?) the pitch was a Quagmire, but as you say Huddy just seemed to glide across the pitch. This was recently posted on another thread. Is the match you're talking about? Yes, footy pitches went downhill the day Derby left the baseball ground. Great day out.

Went to watch some testimonial game at Chelsea in which Alan and Geortge Best played. My girlfriend went to the women's toilet, where two skinhead women accosted her and said: "what do you think of Alan Hudson?" She thought she was going to get her head kicked in, but replied: "That's why we're here, to watch him." One of the skinheads replied: "Yeah, worst thing that ever happened to Chelsea was when he left," and wandered morosely off.

If anyone wants a ticket for this special night let me know as tickets are available at the moment.

Our opinions count for jack shit, but if you add them to everyone else's it starts to paint a picture that only a complete cockwomble would ignore. It's about knowing your history. Stoke City isn't all about the current players or manager, it's as much about those who got us to this point in our history, we stand on the shoulders of giants. I never saw Stan, Neil Franklin, Freddie Steele, Jimmy Mac, Eddie Stuart, Eddie Clamp etc, etc, but I so wished I had. I love listening to those that were fortunate to have seen them describe just how good they were. For what it's worth Huddy is probably the best player I've seen in a Stoke shirt during the 50+ years I've been a Stoke fan. But for some unfortunate squad injuries and that bitch, Lady Luck, not looking kindly on us, he probably would have inspired us to our only Div 1 Championship success. As good as Huddy was however, my favourite Stoke player is and forever will be the one, the only, the sublime Jimmy Greenhoff.

There was one bloke who described Alan Hudson as "the finest English player of his generation". He wasn't a Stoke City supporter. In fact he played for Manchester United. He was called George Best.
Fortunate enough to see both spells at Stoke. As an attacking midfielder, he had the lot. Skill, speed, he could go past players, great vision, great passer. Just always seem to have more time and see the game better than anybody else on the pitch.

Look into the history of your own club. The great players who have worn the shirt through different generations then maybe you might realise why they get talked about. I'm sure the other quotes on this thread from the likes of shankly might put it in perspective. Your comment suggests you are just in it for the here and now but this club is far more than that.

Believe us when we tell you he was a genius. At his peak and on form I would put Hudson in a Stoke team ahead of Zidane. He could move the top half of his body and beat two men. He had the minimal thing going on where he would pass the ball two metres.... but at an angle nobody else could pick out and it's change the move altogether.

I have to agree. If the England manager would have had the ability to recognise it we would and could have been world beaters. He transformed Stoke when he came and for 2 years we were universally regarded as one of THE best teams in the country. For that I will be forever grateful. check this out too

Not quite at Messi, Ronaldo or Neymar standard but most who saw him play will say he is the most talented Stoke footballer for the last 45 years bar none ! He controlled the team to an extent that on the odd occasion he did not play , his teammates, many of whom were internationals , simply did not know what to.do !

Only saw him in his second spell. Still a great player to watch then. Formed good partnership with Sammy McIlroy in 84. Same here matey. My Dad has been watching Stoke from early 60's and says its a toss up between Huddy and Denis Violet who is the best player he has seen play for us. On a personal note,I played against Huddy a few years after his retirement when he played for Richmond Leisure Centre. The bloke ran the game. Violet in my opinion he could do everything Hudson could and score goal as well, I thought Jimmy Mac was better than Hudson as well.

Saw his first spell on TV, saw his second spell in person. Was mesmerised. Bought the first book and then the publishing of another book/DVD coincided with the birth of my first born. I bought it and paid for the "dedication" .."to Matthew Davies a future Stoke legend , from Alan Hudson always a Stoke legend". matthew is now 8. When he found out that an ex-professional footballer had dedicated a book/DVD to him, he was well made up ( I didn't tell him I had paid for it). At his request, we sat down and watched the DVD together, he was enthralled by Huddy's skills. Afterwards he went outside and tried to emulate and practice them. Whatever I paid, whatever anyone pays to see, talk, watch, read....it's worth it. My son who wasn't alive when Huddy reigned, who lives 235 miles from Stoke, was,is impressed, my son has the Internet and the premier league plastic generation at the push of the button. I cannot thank Alan Hudson enough for my memories and being able to share them with my son, not just nostalgia, but sheer brilliance appreciated then by one generation and now, by another.
