Did you have a little runway metal? I did. Which went down like a lead balloon as we'd been upgraded to business class as the plane was half empty. Lots of people grunted disapprovingly.....

We beat the favourites and effectively knocked them out. Quarter finals is good for England. ALTHOUGH looking back on the Germany game, as ever, they got further in the competition than us. They made the final and weren't much good.

All the goals came from Liverpool players....And by god did the dippers like reminding everyone, bit like West Ham who won the World Cup in 66... I was in the Crown and Anchor in Stone, and what a night....

True enough but that's the difference between England (1/4-final ok) and Germany (win or bust) We had by far the best squad we'd sent to a finals since probably 1970 with one exception, the goalkeeper - Seaman was at least 2years past his peak and the backup (James & I think Martyn) were totally hit and miss. That Ronaldinho goal probably haunts him as much as Nayim lobbing Seaman (ahem) all them years ago

I remember being in the same pub (or at least definitely one in Stone) a few months later when Beckham scored that free-kick against Greece - I still carry a small scar where my knuckles hit the artex ceiling

Yep. IMHO the game went when Rivaldo equalised. Suddenly it was a lot hotter. And there was the Churchill/Duncan Smith factor. A point has to be made, players knew what was at stake so what's with the needing motivating? He did have a bit of a point though. Sven was overall a very good England manager, (despite what some may claim) but not altering his approach in a moment like that was an error

USA quarter final and S Korea in semi. If we had beaten Nigeria in the last group game we would have won the group. (I think)

A strong Denmark team that we destroyed and then Brazil. I think that was the last time we looked like winning the world cup. Just a shame about that Free kick

A great night that promised so much but failed to materialise Germany changed their whole system after this and went onto far better things, we seemed to go backwards for a decade, 1 players injury in each competition seemed to be a downfall
